Kiwi's Diet

Here is my simple diet for Kiwi:
Half a big leaf of romaine lettuce, or two small leaves.
One piece fruit(generally apple, banana, strawberry, or pear)
One piece carrot(or other vegetable)
Small handful greens(Cut up celery, broccoli, parsley, cilantro, and bok choy.)

Do you think it is okay? Like, is it good enough to provide her the nutrition, vitamin c, and minerals her body needs?
I will try to add in more things according to the charts here: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...arts-info.html
But, I can't buy too much stuff to put in the fridge because there isn't much space, but if you have anything else to suggest that Kiwi should eat on a daily basis please tell me!

Re: Kiwi's Diet

Are you feeding these things everyday?

Romaine can be fed daily as well as the cilantro and a small bit of carrot is ok, but everything else should be fed according to my charts. Have you tried bell pepper? It's a good daily.

I'd ditch banana altogether. It's not a very good choice and it can leave a pig bloated if fed too much. Even though some of the fruits say they can be fed daily, it's better to not feed them daily as they are still a source of sugars.

Re: Kiwi's Diet

Fruits should only be fed 1-2x a week at most. Ditch the bananas, it's not worth the risk of your piggies getting sick from them. The Bok-choy and broccoli can cause gas so it shouldn't be fed more than 1-2x per week and should be fed sparingly, not too much per feeding. If you are pressed for space to store your veggies/lettuces, you can rotate what you feed every week/few days. One week you can feed romain and green leave, the next week you can feed red leave and endive and samething with other veggies. Variety is best for the piggies. It helps to keep them interested in different foods. Some of the veggies I feed is eggplant, turnips, parsnips, tomatoes, kohlrabi, cauliflower, beets, acorn/butternut/speghetti squash, dill and anise(sp?). Don't be afraid to try different veggies, your piggies may just thank you for it

Re: Kiwi's Diet

Thanks.

I'll try different kinds of lettuce(no iceburg of course) and rotate which one i use every week.

Then fruit, she loves fruit so much but I'll judt ditch the bananas then. I know fruit has a lot of sugar but I consider it her daily treat since she loves it so much.

Oh, bell pepper. She HATES them. She will not touch peppers, she is weird like that.

But how much vegetable should she get in a day...like not counting the romaine lettuce leaf, but maybe 1/2 a cup of vegetables(parsley, celery, bok choy, cilantro, ect.?)

Re: Kiwi's Diet

They should get the minimum of one cup of veggies daily, but remember as we've told you, some of those foods cannot be fed on a daily basis.

The thing with sugar is that some pigs are prone to conditions like diabetes. They can also become obese with too many sugary treats. It would still be a good idea to limit the fruits to 1-2 times per week instead of daily. If you want to give her a daily "treat", then give her an extra piece of lettuce. Just because she loves fruit so much doesn't mean it's good for her or her health.

Re: Kiwi's Diet

Thanks!

I'll limit her fruit to twice a week.

I will try to make a menu every week like I do with my rats and I'll post it when I'm done.

Question Re: Kiwi's Diet

I am a little confused when they say half a big leaf of romaine. Like as in one leaf, you take the head and pull off one leaf and tear that in half?? I guess that doesn't seem like a lot to me my four can go through a whole head of red or green leaf lettuce a day. Am I overdoing it?

She can have a whole large leaf of romaine each feeding.

I have 5 sows. They get about 1/2 a large head of lettuce per day. That's usually 1/4 of a head of romaine and 1/4 of a head of red/green leaf depending on size of the head, if they are small heads, they get more. I feed them several types of veggies per day so the other veggies cut down on having to feed extra lettuce as filler. If you remember, variety is the key to a good veggie diet.
