Hay?? Hello, I'm off to buy my Guinea Pigs hay today, and I was wondering, what type of hay is best? I currently have some normal hay (a hay bale) which got very wet in the rain, and I don't use anymore. The next bale we buy is going to go in the laundry which I have re-named as the "Feed Room" ever since we've got these piggies, foods everywhere, .I also have some "Guinea Pig & Rabit" hay which is good quality, but we're almost out. I will defintly get more of this, but I feel we need a more variety of hay, any suggestions? Thanks in advance

| Re: Hay?? Apparently every type of hay is it's benefits, but it seems that Timothy based is the best. I have had horrible luck with buying hay in the stores, none of it seems fresh, and is often very crunchy/crisp and occasionally discolored. My bunny and piggies seem to eat it up just the same, but I personally wouldn't guess it's very good quality. I am actually going to start ordering my hay online, Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome |

Re: Hay?? I order my hay online by the bale or half bale and it has stayed green in color and my pigs and bunny eat it up so fast! They love it! I did have to cut it up because the strands were so long but that did not take long at all. Oxbow has great timothy but I felt the shipping and handeling cost was close to 20 bucks! I can't remember where I just bought my last batch from but I should be recieving it any day now so once I get it I will let you know. I have bought my last batch from Alfala King and I got 50 pounds for 36.00 and I purchased that about 3 or 4 months ago and that has fed 6 guinea pigs and my rabbit! I still have three more boxes of it!! http://www.alfalfaking.com/ Timothy I think is the best for them, anything I have read or anyone I have talked to says to get Timothy Hay. Babies though should have some alfalfa hay. Once I finish this half bale I purchased I'm going to be going to my local feed stores and see how much they charge for hay.

Re: Hay?? I highly recommend KM's Hayloft (www.kmshayloft.com). When you factor in the price with shipping included, and figure out the cost per pound that way, it's 1/2 the price per pound of what I was getting in the stores. The quality is incredible. The piggies go crazy for it!

Re: Hay?? Any type of grass hay is fine to feed. Most are very similar in nutritional value and it really doesn't matter the type. Young pigs under 6 months can benefit from alfalfa hay but it's not really all that necessary if you feed a good veggie diet and alfalfa based pellets. All pigs no matter the age should have unlimited access to a grass hay.

Re: Hay?? I order bluegrass from KM and my girls prefer the bluegrass over the Timothy. I don't even use Timothy anymore except for the chinnies. Orchard grass I think is very similiar to Bluegrass, is it LY?

Re: Hay?? Orchard and bluegrass are very similar. From some companies they are the same thing. Any grass hay is fine though. If you do decide to order in bulk from an online purveyor, which I highly recommend, definitely do what Lorvoll suggested. Take the price of the product, add the cost of the shipping, and divide that by the total number of pounds to determine the true price per pound. You'll be shocked how inexpensive it really is to buy in bulk.
