Eating Once-Sprayed Grass? I'd like to take my piggies out in the spare pet store cage I have (I don't want to sell it so I just keep it for transportation) but the grass in our yard has been sprayed a few weeks ago. It's rained quite a lot since then, and my Mom says the chemicals will have all washed out and they'd love some fresh air and tasty grass, but do chemicals wash away for good? They've never had grass before so it'd be really nice for them to try it and go outside!

Re: Eating Once-Sprayed Grass? I believe once its been mowed and rained that is eventually washes away. Especially if it has been three weeks. I'm pretty sure that is it just wait for some other members to also agree to make sure I'm on the right road.

Re: Eating Once-Sprayed Grass? Kinda depends who you ask. Alot of the spraying companies will say the grass is safe again within a few weeks or months and a couple rain storms. Advocates for using organic materials and never spraying with chemicals say it lasts for years in the soil. I would bet if it was sprayed recently there is still some around and will be for at least the rest of the summer. It may not obviously effect pets walking around on it or kids playing on it but guinea pigs aren't just sitting on the grass. They are eating it. If there is even a tiny bit of the chemicals left and the pigs eat enough grass they could get sick. Personally to be safe I wouldn't let them eat from a yard that has been sprayed until the following year. If you want grass for them I suggest setting aside an area that doesn't get sprayed and is uphill from the rest of the yard(or make a raised bed) so the rain doesn't wash the chemicals down into that area. Then again I'm on the side of never spraying a yard for any reason with anything that could be toxic. There are plenty of nontoxic ways to deal with any weeds or pests you might need to get rid of.

Re: Eating Once-Sprayed Grass? Thanks for the replies - I won't give my piggies any grass since my Mom is totally on chemically stuff for the lawn. Maybe if she calms down and uses more natural stuff I will in a year - there have been some pretty heavy rainstorms around but I don't want to risk it!
