Star Reeds Canarygrass hay

I know of this guy who is a farmer and told me about this type of hay he cuts and feeds to his cattle, it's call Reeds Canarygrass hay. Has anyone ever heard of this? He said he would give me all I wanted for my piggies. I wanted to check here first before he goes through the trouble of bringing me a couple of bales. He says it's a nice hay and he cuts before it gets stemmy. He also cuts Kuntucky bluegrass, would these be safe to feed to my piggies?

Re: Reeds Canarygrass hay

Both are grass hays, and in the same family as timothy and bermuda grass..... They should be fine to feed.

Re: Reeds Canarygrass hay

Thanks, I will get a couple bales of each and try it out on my girls. He said I could have all that I wanted for free, he is a good friend of ours. He said that if I could wait till next week, he would cut fresh bales for me and deliver them ASAP. He also cuts Alfalfa but I don't really need that, but it is nice to know I could get it if I should need it.

Re: Reeds Canarygrass hay

My friend brought over that bale of freshly cut Reeds Canary and my girls are loving it. It smells so fresh and the piggies think so too. I'm still going to buy the bluegrass but if Paul can keep me in the canary grass I won't have to buy Timothy hay. The bale he brought over should last most of the summer. How long can hay be stored? Can it be stored outside during the winter months?

I wouldn't store it outside ever. It needs to be kept in a dry place. With it outside, you'd get moisture and dew in it and it could get moldy.

Ditto Ly. It needs to be stored 1) in a dry place 2) in a container that allows airflow, 3) and preferably out of direct sunlight as the sun will bleach it out and degrade its nutritional value.

Re: Reeds Canarygrass hay

Sorry, I should have made myself clearer. I ment by keeping it in a shed. The shed is dry year round and the hay would be in boxes in a shelf. The shed is not heated but it is dry. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Reeds Canarygrass hay

Is it possible for piggies to eat too much hay? My girls are absolutely going nuts over this new hay. I can not keep their hay racks full. They aren't even eating the bluegrass anymore. All they want is this canary grass, I guess I can't blame them. It smells good enough for me to eat.

That's fine as long as it's kept off the ground and out of direct sunlight.

Re: Reeds Canarygrass hay

Thanks LY, it's good to know I can store it out in the shed than. I can't get over how much my girls are loving this new hay. I woke up this morning at 6 am and both racks were empty, it's now 4:30 pm and I had filled both racks for the 4th time already today. They haven't touched the bluegrass at all today. I just placed an order with KM for 35lbs. of bluegrass, I was going to cancell it but they already shipped it. What am I going to do if my girls have decided that this new hay is their drug of choice?

Re: Reeds Canarygrass hay

If your pigs won't eat it, pm me and I will see about buying it from you. My girls love KM's hays.

I buy the bluegrass from Km because they love it so much and were eating it like candy. Now that I have this new hay, they are ignoring the bluegrass. I am going to alternate the days between the bluegrass and the canary hay. If they eat the bluegrass that way than it will be fine if not, I will pm you.
