Cavies and Strawberrys

I went to a PetLand that was close to my house to just look at the kind of cavies they had. I told the small animal handler there that I feed my guinea a strawberry every 2 or 3 days. She told me that was a terrible thing to feed to him and that he(Bubba) will develope diabetes early in life. I was wondering if this was true or if strawberries are ok to feed?.......He really enjoys them.

Re: Cavies and Strawberrys

They are fine in moderation, 1 or 2 a week. They are a good source of Vit C i think...

I don't think I've ever heard of a guinea pig with diabetes! Take anything someone says in petland with a pinch of salt. All you have to do is take one look at their display cages and realise they don't know what they are talking about in the slightest!

You can give 5 small strawberry's daily.

Please do not purchase at petstore's, they support breeding mills, BYB's, animal cruelty and give out bad care advice (as you can tell):

Re: Cavies and Strawberrys

Ditto...Fay's information. That's the same chart I have hanging in my kitchen to reference everyday. I keep it with the calendar that I jot down on what I fed, and on what days.

Instead of doling out more wrong advice - the pet stores need to come to this site, GL, and Pigloo.net and take a good look at the illnesses, diseases, and health problems THEIR ignorance causes. Grrrrr!

That's why most of us here would love to see the day that pet stores stop selling animals. But, they never will as long as people keep buying them there.

You tell your little Bubba to munch his strawberries up and enjoy every bite!

P.S. We never, ever, ever go to a pet store for anything. We have four cavies and there is NOTHING in a pet store that they need. We are able to get all of their food, toys, supplies, housing, bedding, etc., without going anywhere near a pet store. We also know that the temptation to "rescue" the guinea pigs from there to give them a good home would be too much for us to resist!

Re: Cavies and Strawberrys

Yes, piggies can get diabetes, but follow that chart of good piggy food and you'll do fine. You can find more about Diabetes at the usual source, Guinealynx.

My silly piggers eat the tops of strwberries, the green part, not the red part.

Re: Cavies and Strawberrys

My piggies don't like strawberries, they are very strange. They don't have a sweet tooth at all, they prefere green veg rather then fruit. Strange!

Re: Cavies and Strawberrys

Mine aren't too fond of strawberries and raspberries but if I have some for myself they usually get one each although they don't like it and don't eat a lot of it.

They like sniff it and then look up with this look of "Okay mommy, funny joke now where's the real food? Wheeeek Wheeek" you know the drill!

Oh so true...*sigh*.

Ours will turn their little noses up at yummy sweet treats and turn around and munch on a dry cardboard tube!

Guinea pigs is nuts!

Petland is one of the worst. Never listen to a pet store employee's advice.

Re: Cavies and Strawberrys

Ha! I know that look too. My pigs are used to their baby greens mix, their green peppers and some carrots. When I give them something new, or I don't include their mixed greens, they sniff all throughtheir bowl and look at me like "um hello, did you forget something??" Spoiled pigs :P
