Types of Hay I get meadow hay for my piggies and today I went to the shop where I buy it from and they only had the one in the green packaging but I needed some so I bought it anway. (I usually get the blue) It is quite green and really soft, kind of silky, but is called meadow hay. Could someone please tell me what the difference between this and my normal hay is ?

Re: Types of Hay Is it the same brand? Any meadow hay is going to be a grass hay, so either package should be fine. What you have is probably from a different cutting. Many types of hay are cut several times a year, and the texture of the hay can be different from cutting to cutting.

Re: Types of Hay My piggies get a mix of two or three kinds of hay/dried grass, depending on what's available etc. You could try giving them a mix of old and new, and see what they prefer.

Re: Types of Hay I find that almost all meadow hay in petstores in the UK is dry and brown. I've only noticed greener stuff relatively recently, but I usually find it is called timothy hay. I buy Oxbow hay, available from SPH supplies Sph Pet Supplies, Pet Suppliers Wholesale and Retail, Pet Food and Bedding (scroll down this page for hays, and click the next page too for more). It is always green and softer than anything I've seen for sale in this country. You can get Oxbow hay from some pet stores but it is quite pricey and drier in smaller bags. It's much cheaper to buy it in bulk. I'm going to try and get some decent hay from a horse stables. Wish me luck! Another excellent online shop is the Thistle Cavies Rescue online shop. Herbs,Hay and tasty treats.
