Celery

I looked at the chart and it said celery shouldn't be given daily. Why is this? What harm could it to do them? I only ask because celery is my guinea pigs favorite thing right behind romaine lettuce. I would love to be able to give it to them daily, but obviously not if it will cause harm.

Re: Celery

It's mostly water like iceberg and cucumber - little nutrients, and they can choke on the strings.

Re: Celery

Another reason is due to the oxalic acid content.

Oxalic acid combines with metals such as calcium, iron, sodium, magnesium, and potassium in the body to form crystals of the corresponding oxalates, which irritate the gut and kidneys. Because it binds vital nutrients such as calcium, long-term consumption of foods high in oxalic acid can lead to nutrient deficiencies.

Thanks so much! I'll stick to just giving it a few times a week. They just love it so darn much. Why can't they like carrots that much?

Carrots are high in calcium and Vitamin A so aren't an ideal daily food. A small baby carrot or two a day is okay, but I know with mine I tend to only feed carrots once a week or two.

Now, if your pig could like coriander (cilantro), peppers, other lettuces, and courgette (zucchini) as much as celery, then that would be good!

Re: Celery

I tried to give celery to my pigs, the one grabbed it and through it out of the cage. Its find for the pig to eat but doesn't provide much, if it is bad for the pig, the pig probably wont eat it.

That's not true. It's like a kid eating McDonald's every day - they like it so they eat it but it's bad for them. You put a pile of carrots and banana in the cage and the pig will probably eat it. Is it good for them? No.
