Can the piggies have sprouts?

Are alfalfa sprouts, dandelion sprouts, or broccoli sprouts OK to give the piggies? Mine are so picky, and I am running out of veggies to try that are listed as "daily" or "2-4 times per week" on the food chart. They are only interested in a few different kinds of greens (especially romaine and cilantro), bell peppers (they refused the green this week), tomatoes, strawberries, cherries, and one of them will eat raspberries. The lists of foods they won't eat is longer the the list of ones they will! We have offered almost everything else in yellow or blue on the food chart, and they won't eat it. We haven't offered most of the foods that are recommended with a less often frequency because, with only two piggies eating it, it would go bad before they were able to eat it all up.

How many times have you tried the different foods? Do you try them just a few times or are you consistantly putting a small amount in the cage for a 2-3 week period and leaving it in there for several hours?

These are ok but need to be fed only about twice per week.

Re: Can the piggies have sprouts?

We have tried a couple days in a row, wait a couple of days, and try again. This is how we got Papaya to finally eat the raspberries. I guess we will keep trying...
Ly&Pigs, thank you for responding. I know you are the resident expert on nutrition.

Re: Can the piggies have sprouts?

I'm interested in this too.

Friends of mine are SERIOUS raw foodists and do a lot of sprouting. I'd like to do a sprout setup for us and the cavies come winter.

I'm interested in growing:

sunflower greens
buckwheat greens(not really wheat at all, its broadleaved)
wheatgrass
radish greens
pea greens

In the next 1-2 months it will be corn picking season. Corn husks and silks are a great every day item you can feed the pigs, and I have yet to find a pig that doesn't just devour them. You can often find places that will give you the husks for free, and you can also buy/freeze the corn for your family and give the pigs all the outer "discarded" parts.

Re: Can the piggies have sprouts?

To show how picky my piggies are, they will not eat the corn husks! It also made me a little nervous to offer the silks. Is there any danger of them getting tangled or knotted inside the piggies intestinal track and cause problems?

Re: Can the piggies have sprouts?

No more danger than a long blade of grass poses. IThe silks are actually very delicate compared to grass and the pigs do a great job at grinding them up as they take them in their mouths. My piggies will dig through the husks to find the silks and just devour them.
