Sugars in Yellow Bell Peppers?

Question - I see that red bell peppers have a high sugar content (4.2g/100g) and green have a lower amount (2.4g/100g). How about yellow peppers? I see that they have the most Vitamin C of all so they seem to be the ideal but I worry that they might have a lot of sugars too.

Anyone have any idea how much sugar / 100g yellow bell peppers have or any suggestions on serving size or how much yellow pepper you could consider a daily "serving" that you include in the rest of its daily diet for a ~1000g pig?

Thanks!

Re: Sugars in Yellow Bell Peppers?

It's somewhere between green and red. The USDA website didn't have a sugar content listed for the yellow ones thus I had to leave it off of the charts. Also keep in mind that not every single bell pepper will have those exact nutritional contents. They vary by size, weight, where they are grown, the soil used, fertilizers used, etc.

I would say that you could feed yellow in the same amounts as as you would feed the green ones.

Which is how much exactly? I know of course not to feed the center / seeds. Maybe 1/10 of the outside as a "serving" ?

Re: Sugars in Yellow Bell Peppers?

You can feed around 1/4-1/5 of a bell pepper for 2 pigs daily. There is no "set" amount. I feed my girls 1/2 a large bell pepper daily but that's for 5. If peppers are on sale, they get a whole one daily.

Why can't the center be fed? Is there a health concern I need to worry about?I have always fed it along with the rest of the pepper (minus the seeds of course.) I was told by a friend that the center has the highest concentration of vit C. Is there a way to find out if that is true?

Re: Sugars in Yellow Bell Peppers?

I've only read that the seeds can pose a choaking hazzard. I havn't read of any adverse nutritional effects. I think it's easier to get the seeds out just to cut the entire middle part out. I'd like to know as well though, anything good for the pig isn't worth tossing.

Re: Sugars in Yellow Bell Peppers?

Idon't know about the middle, but I have heard that the seeds are poisonous to humans. So I don't feed the center/seeds since I would be worried that the piggies would get poisoned from any seeds accidentally left on the middle.

Re: Sugars in Yellow Bell Peppers?

I've never heard that about the middle either. If you want to spend the extra time removing the seeds from the center core, be my guest but it's easier to chop a pepper in half and remove the seeds along with the center.

Re: Sugars in Yellow Bell Peppers?

Bell pepper seeds are not, as far as I can tell, poisonous; bell peppers are apparently the same species as jalapenos, but with two copies of a recessive gene, resulting in no spiciness compared to jalapenos. Jalapenos and other hot peppers are frequently seeded because the heat is concentrated in the seeds and membranes. I can readily believe the seeds might be a choking hazard, though, considering the size and shape, and I did find one reference to melon seeds as a problem in this regard.
