Comparison Shopping For Hay

I was thinking about ordering hay online and I was not sure which company to order hay from to get the best price. So I did some research and this is what I came up with:

To compare apples to apples I looked at Timothy Hay the 40 OUNCE size.

Oxbow - $8.50 (.21 cents per ounce)
Orchard Meadow - $5.50 (.14 cents per ounce)
Kleen - $22.00 - for 40 POUNDS NOT 40 OUNCES (.04 cents per ounce)

Am I doing this math right? Could that really be the case here? Is Kleenmama really that much less expensive then the others?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Lisa

Re: Comparison Shopping For Hay

You need to factor in the shipping charge before dividing by the number of pounds or ounces to get a fair comparison by price. Using 40oz on 2 of the brands and 40lbs on KM isn't comparing "apples to apples".

Re: Comparison Shopping For Hay

Thank's for such a quick reply Percy's mom.

I was going to try to compare the same size bag but Kleenmama does not offer a 40 ounce size. They only offer their product in pounds.

I will have to look at shipping costs, I didn't even think to do that.

Thanks again.

Re: Comparison Shopping For Hay

I've compared Kleenmama and Oxbow for myself before, and I see you're from Rhode Island so I just changed the zip to reestimate shipping and this is what I got:

Kleenmama starts from 16.3cents per oz if you get the 5lb bag, and it is only 7.7cents per oz if you get the 45 lb bag.
Oxbow ranges from 96.7cents per oz (yikes!) if you get the 15oz bag, and is only 7.5cents per oz for the 50lb bag.

Basically, it pays to buy in bulk! And with the way that piggies go through hay, it's probably worth it.

Re: Comparison Shopping For Hay

I have also compared in the past to my own zipcode.
Kleenmama's always comes out the cheapest for me, and once you see her product....there is no comparison. Absolutely the best price, and the best hay hands down.

The more bulk you buy, the cheaper the price is per lb. I purchase the 45 lb box of bluegrass from kleenmama and the amount of product plus shipping, divided out by lbs is cheaper than any other option--not to mention it lasts me so long that it saves me not having to pay shipping again for a good long while. I got 45 lbs for $48.00 in February and with 7 pigs (6 now) I have only used about 1/4th of the box so far.

Re: Comparison Shopping For Hay

I won't buy Kleenmama's hay. At least not right now. It's cheaper for me to order from Oxbow.

I always order 50lb of hay from Oxbow. With shipping it comes out to $54.93.

The largest hay you can order from Kleenmama's is 45lb. With shipping that comes out to $55.45.

It's around $1 more for 5lb less.

If I add a small 5lb box to the 45lb order at Kleenmama's, guess how much more I end up paying? Grand total for 50lb from Kleenmama's with shipping comes to $71.08

I have 4 rabbits and 7 guinea pigs. Right now I have to think about finances. If some extra money comes my way I'll spring for some bluegrass hay from Kleenmama's. In the meantime, it's all Oxbow for me.

For those that don't know, you can special order 55 lbs of timothy as it will fit in the large box.

Thanks, I'll email her about that! I would love to try some bluegrass; I just haven't been able to justify it yet where cost is concerned. I'll look into some more comparing of my own.

Re: Comparison Shopping For Hay

I agree with buying in bulk, ever so much cheaper. I have allowed my resident experts (9 piggies) to do a taste comparison of Kleenmama and Oxbow. I had just ordered 50lbs of Oxbow when I was given 45 lbs of Kleenmama! We are wallowing in it. My piggies have thoroughly tested both brands for flavor, freshness, crunch and even ease of tunneling, and the verdict is unanimous: The experts say "We love it ALL! More, more more!"
