mom got wrong food. can i do this?

So, my mom got the wrong food maybe a week or two ago. I told her that mixed food causes diabetes. She fed my guinea pig the food all ready so we couldn't take it back. Could i just pick out all of the extra things in it? It has corn pieces and little seeds. I don't want her to have medical issues or choke on the food. I already have been picking out the extras but now I'm not sure if i can do that. Please and Thank you.

It would be easier to just buy new food and throw the mix out. You could try to pick out all the seeds and stuff but that's going to take a lot of time and most likely it's a poor quality pellet anyway as most pellets in mixes are.

Thanks. Its a fairly small bag anyway at 4 pounds. Its actually very easy to pick them out. What are some fruits and veggies i can give my piggy to help. I give her carrots, oranges and green bell peppers. I used to give spinach but I'm most likely not doing that because thats what got my last piggy.

Well she's a "fanatic Moderator" isn't she? [I'd say fantastic instead of fanatic - but she wrote her own title!]

I would also just recommend tossing out the old food and buying new. That is what I did. As Voodoo pointed out even with picking the seeds and what not out, the pellets themselves are poor quality. And depending upon what brand you got, it is possible that the ingredients may in fact pose a threat. Somewhere around here there is a thread [or more that one] that talks about specific chemicals/ingredients that you can easily read on the back of the bag that can be harmful.

If you are able, I'd highly recommend picking up some Oxbow Cavy Cuisine pellets at a store near you. I paid $8 for my bag and it's going to last a while - and my girls LOVE it. If you are unsure if there is a store near you that is carrying it, you can call Oxbow or use their store locator on their website to see what may be around you.

What?? Mixed pellet food causes diabetes?! I just read that in the first message. I always got my piggy the mixed food. So should I stop and just get her plain pellets?

Too much sugar of any kid can cause diabetes in a guinea pig. There are lots of other reasons NOT to feed a mixed food though. Mixes tend to be highly fattening and often the seeds can stick to cavies' teeth causing them to choke. Most of the mixes are also made of much lower quality ingredients.
