Re: Veggies left in cage? I give 2 feedings a day: Once at the morning and once at around sunset. I take out the morning veggies when I give them the second feeding, and the second feeding I leave in overnight so they have something to munch on while I'm asleep, and I take it out when I feed them again at the next morning.

Re: Veggies left in cage? I take them out if they've finished eating, although thats rare for my girls. They usually polish them all off!

Re: Veggies left in cage? The plate of veggies I put in for my girls is always finnished by evening. If I am trying them with something new (and nutritious!) - I might leave it in overnight. Usually if there is nothing else fresh to eat - they might have a nibble. I wouldn't leave anything for longer than a day - or overnight, though I suppose it depends on your environmental conditions. It is pretty cold here at the moment - I defrost my freezer at this time of year, as I can just put everything outside in a box and it stays frozen!

As far as lettuces/leafy veggies, if the pigs don't eat them right away you will want to remove them after 2-3 hours if they are wilted. |

Re: Veggies left in cage? I can't imagine pigs leaving anything in the cage FOR you to remove after a hour! My boars are all so afraid the others might get more than them, that they seriously stand there and pig out until all evidence of veggies is gone! The sows usually finish theirs off too, but occasionally they leave things behind that they don't like as well... After a few hours I will take it out and toss it down in the boar cage--they have no shame helping the girls polish off their dinner!

Re: Veggies left in cage? Ly I think Ive heard it on a Swedish page, but Im not sure. Mine are very picky, and when they eat veggies they allways takes 2-3 bits and then has to go and eat some hay and then they come back. Suppose the are a bit strange...But they have always done it like that.

Re: Veggies left in cage? My 4 pigs get their veggies during floor time, never in their cage. They eat their veggies then want to be back in their cage within half an hour!

Re: Veggies left in cage? I look quite often into my piggies' cages. If I happen to see any veggies having gone (means: dirty with hay or bedding or poop ... or having become yellowish or dry) I take it out immediately. Normally, I go through the cages twice or three times a day. But everything that looks edable (is that the right word? sorry, am not a native speaker) I leave inside. My piggies are quite picky about certain veggies. I try to be a little "pedagogic" ![]()

Re: Veggies left in cage? My pigs also work back and forth between the veggie basket and the hay rack, nibbling on both. Not such a strange behavior after all I guess.

The reason for this is that mowers badly bruise the grass and it starts to ferment. The gas/alcohol it creates from the fermentation can make animals very ill. Fresh grass cut with scissors does not get so bruised so can be left in longer. |

Re: Veggies left in cage? My guinea pigs usually eat all of their veggies, but if were to ever leave them in there, I would take them out at night. So far, they have never done this yet.

Re: Veggies left in cage? Most veggies, such as peppers, tomatoes, squash, are going to feel slimy if they are spoiled. Lettuces will get very wilted and begin to look "beaten and scarred" when they are going bad. Corn husks are pretty durable, but silks will turn brown when they are spoiling. Just use your good judgment. If something isn't spoiled, there is no need to remove it.
