No. Apple sauce is about 50% sugar. |

I personally wouldnt give mine either. Just be on the safe side and give them some fresh sliced apple, just not too much. |

I don't know about cavies, but hedgies are allowed small servings of UNsweetened applesauce... with the *UN*sweetened part being key. In this case the only sugars would those which naturally occur in apples; but that's me speaking "hedgie" - which may not apply to cavies. |

I would say that if you read the ingredients and see that there is no sugar, than wouldn't it be like giving them apples in a different form? You would also have to check for preservatives and all that crap, and maybe make sure you're not giving them too much since it would be more difficult to determine how apple much you are in fact giving them. If you have a food processor/blender you could do it yourself. Seems like a lot of work though! Tere |

As far as the sugar content goes, unless you get the "little kid" applesauces, the sugar is mostly from the apples. You don't want to give your piggies applesauce because it is cooked, and their fruits and veggies really need to be raw. If you're having to handfeed with a pellet slurry or Critical Care because your guinea pig is sick, you can add a bit of unsweetened or natural applesauce to make your feed taste better to your cavies though. |

You could always make your own apple sauce. I make it for Bandit who I am hand feeding. I use a blender and I cut up 1/6 of an granny smith and red delicious apple and I add juice of half of an orange careful not to get any seeds in the blender . It don't make a difference if you have the peel on or not just make sure that you don't have any seeds in it. I use this to mix in a pellet slurry . I also use my blender to grind his pellet to a semi power, I put 2 cups of pellets in the blender, along with 1 chewable vitamin c tablet, 1 papaya enzyme tablet and 1 b12 complex tablet once every thing ground up,I put in a air tight container. |

When I had a guinea pig with severe maloclussion, I fed her soft unsweetened apple sauce (often sold as "Apple Puree") mixed with mushy pellets, to get her weight up for an operation, though she unfortunately died before the surgery. I would only feed applesauce under unusual circumstances as most is sweetened and apples aren't the best food. |
