Re: Vegtable question

Guinea pigs require 1 cup of vegetables each, each day.
Here is a list of veggies and how often they can be given. http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...on-charts.html

Re: Vegtable question

I have a list of veggies that are my pigs staple veggies:
Leaf lettuce, cilantro, red and green bell peppers, carrots.
I feed those veggies every single day because I know the pigs love them, will eat them, and get enough daily vit c from them.

I use Ly's list (the link standuprookie supplied above) as a guideline so I can offer more variety to keep them healthy, happy, and interested. I take it with me once a week as a reference for additional veggies/fruit variety. What I buy from the list changes from week to week, depending on availability, what I find at a good price, and how often it can be safely fed.

Pigs love grass, and most are safe to feed. Just be sure that any grass that you feed them has not been sprayed with any chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) and that it isn't a potty spot for other animals.
If your pig is an adult you need to limit things such as dandelions and clover so they don't get too much calcium.

Your pig(s) should also be getting an unlimited supply of grass hay as well.

Re: Vegtable question

If you head on over to Guinea Lynx there is a great section on veggies in the diet pages. There are some veggies that are dangerous and others that are not recommended too. Do a forum search here on "vegetables" or "veggies" and I'm sure you'll find a ton of info.

By the way, "leaf lettuce" means "green leaf" and is not iceberg I'm assuming? Iceberg lettuce is standard item to avoid with pigs as there is no nutrional content, no fiber and it gives them loose bowels.

Re: Vegtable question

Yes, Leaf lettuce is green leaf. Is a a lot like romaine except it has more leafy green part and not as much crispy "stalk" part as romaine has. My pigs hate the stalky part of lettuce, and leave it to get mushed and walked on. I stick mostly with the leaf lettuce since there is more of the part they like.

Iceburg lettuce is a big no no.

Re: Vegtable question

To add to this question

how much is too much?

I know that too much can cause diarrhea, etc.

But I feed Layla about one cup of endive and one cup of lettuce every day.

So she's getting about two cups. Is that too much?

I would gradually reduce that down to one cup - half and half of each. Try and use a variety of other veggies from the charts as well.

I give her cilantro too.

I've tried bell peppers and strawberries, but she won't eat them.

Re: Vegtable question

GL12 I would probably cut the lettuce down to half as well. If she can't fill up on lettuce, she will be more inclined to try the peppers and such eventually. My bunch will fill on lettuce too, so I have to limit how much I put in, when I am trying to get them to eat something new. Try putting bell peppers, a little cilantro, and a slice of apple in her cage in the morning, and leave it there for the day with no lettuce--she might just give in Then give her the lettuce when you come in that night. Doing this for a day or so might make her give in to try the peppers.

Always I am a complete night owl. Don't know what I am going to do about that habit, when I ever go back to work.
I discovered and love the "Piggie-purple" forum format, because beside each persons name it tells if they are online or offline. I can see who is up browsing when I am at insane hours HA!
