To help with vitamin C needs I have been giving my piggies small pieces of orange on occassion but they won't have anything to do with it. Instead I put a ratio of 5 to 1 water to fresh orange juice each day in their bottle. Is this OK? They love, love, love it. |

The acidity in citrus fruit can cause mouth sores if fed too often. If your piggy gets a variety of vegetables then supplementing should not be necessary unless your pig is elderly, pregnant or ill. |

The problem is orange juice is not just juice. It's added sugars and preservatives too. As long as their veggies are balanced, they won't need a supplement. Red bell peppers are healthier and have tons of Vit C. |

Thanks for the help. I squeeze the juice myself for their water. It was my concern that they were not getting enough C but it sounds like they should be OK. I give them bells, cucumbers, kale, raddiccio, timothy hay, and cantalope, apples and carrots (last three once a week and small quantities). Their pellets are Gerty pellets. Does that sound ok for C. I hope they don't miss their yummy juice. |

I just saw Ly's nutrition chart on another thread. Sorry I didn't go there first. Good chart, very comprehensive. |

The Gerty pellets are a mix and shouldn't be fed. Try Oxbow (Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome) or KM's (Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home) |

I just switched over to Oxbow Timothy Hay pellets for my piggy and she loves it WAY better than any of that gross mix stuff that I previously bought. Plus it's way healthier. I suggest switching to Oxbow. I bought the Cavy Cuisine. |

Pellets should be plain with no seeds, nuts, or colored bits in them. Gerty is full of this stuff and should not be fed! Oxbow or Kleenmama's pellets are best, but any plain pellet is better than Gerty. |

Thanks, I found an Oxbow product store just five miles from me. I'll look forward to trying. |

I'm in dreary Connecticut on the border of Massachusetts. Love it here in other seasons, but right now it could not be more dank. Thank goodness for my piggies to cheer up the place. P.S. According to the web, Oxbow distributors are in Agawam, MA a few miles from here. |
