Interesting thing about pellets

Ever since I switched to KM's pellets my piggers only eat about 1/4 a cup of pellets per day, in total, for all four of them! They do have two hay racks that are always full too. I just found that to be interesting because before I was using KM's pellets, all four of the piggies were, in total, eating 1/2 cup of pellets per day, along with one full hay rack of hay.
It makes me happy that they're not eating as many pellets since that means I don't have to buy them so often. But I do wonder if they're getting the proper nutrition considering that their diet is made up mostly of 3rd cut timothy hay, half a red pepper, and about 4 large leaves of boston lettuce per day. I know they really need more veggies, but as of late it's been really overwhelming to try and take care of them, get all my homework done and do well with my job. I need to find a new routine.
So does it sound like they're, nutritionally wise, doing okay, with not eating alot of pellets?

Re: Interesting thing about pellets

The pellets aren't that big of a deal but you really need to add some more variety of veggies to their diet.

Re: Interesting thing about pellets

I just mentioned in a post last night, about my pigs doing this.
I couldn't find any descent pellets in the stores here, so I ditched the crapty pellets and just quit feeding pellets at all for a while. When I ordered hay I went ahead and ordered km pellets as well, but they are only minutely eating them.
When I was buying the junk pellets, they would clean the bowls out, but honestly I think that is because they were junk. They like KM pellets, but they just don't binge feed on them because they aren't packed full of sugars, corn products, etc. That, and since ordering the km hay they have doubled their hay intake--7 pigs completely wipe out 4 hay racks per day (bent grids stuffed full).
I am still putting about 1/2 cup of pellets in each cage, but half or more of them go to waste, and once this bag is finished I doubt I will reorder them--that is just more money I can use for hay.

I would also suggest though, that you increase your veggie variety.
Currently I give my pigs leaf lettuce, cilantro, baby carrots, red and green peppers every day. Apple every other day. And then there are always 2 or 3 other things thrown in, that I change up from week to week. This week it has been corn husks and silks, a few pieces of cabbage, green beans, and tomato.

If your schedule is making it difficult to offer variety, what you might try is buying a box of cheap sandwhich bags (walmart sells like 50 bags for 1.00) or some of the Glad reuseable/throw away bowls. On Saturdays buy your veggie variety, do all your cutting and slicing, and pack bags or bowls with a salad for each day of the week. This way all you have to do is snatch it out of the fridge and dump it in. Takes you 30 seconds, and the pigs get a good variety.

Re: Interesting thing about pellets

I feed my two piggies KMs pellets, too, and they don't eat as many as with the other brands we've used in the past. I fill their bowl once a day (sometimes it isn't quite empty) and it holds a little less than 1/2 cup. I feel KMs pellets have so much more "useful" nutrients that the piggies just don't need to eat as much. I wouldn't worry about the "quantity" of pellets your piggies are eating as long as they are getting a variety of veggies and lots of hay. Keep an eye on their weight just to make sure they are doing OK.
