Is kaytee timothy hay ok?

I know that their pellets contains a cancer causing preservative but is the hay ok?

Re: Is kaytee timothy hay ok?

The hay is fine if that is all you can get. The couple of times I've had to get Kaytee, I found that it was rather brown and almost crispy and had a ton of dust in it.

Re: Is kaytee timothy hay ok?

My 4 girls love it. Its the only kind they will eat. I get it at Walmart or Target and other than the very bottom of the bag it is always long green and smells nice. I usually go through all that the store has and pick out the best.

It is better than the pigs not getting any hay at all.

Re: Is kaytee timothy hay ok?

I use kaytee also and find it to be very green and fresh smelling almost every bag. I think in over a year maybe 2 bags were less fresh, but my understanding is that even the best hay has times of the year it is not as nice.

Re: Is kaytee timothy hay ok?

I used Kaytee for a few days until my KM order came in. Every bag I've had has been very dusty. It's not harmful, but not the best quality.

Re: Is kaytee timothy hay ok?

I've used Kaytee brand a couple of times. Only one bag wasnt super green, but the rest were. I think it more depends on the time of year the hay is harvested.. AND how long it has been packaged [from packaging to trucks to stores to sell floors] Just look at it. and sometimes I even open the bag and smell it... or if its REALLY green and I can smell it from rows away... I know I have a good bag

But I defenatly would use other kaytee products... I think they would have a better rep. if they just stuck with hay, instead of guinea pig pellets with yucky seeds and stuff.

Re: Is kaytee timothy hay ok?

I have never bought a bag of Kaytee hay that was brown, It is always really green and smells good. My problem with the hay is every bag I have bought has been really dusty, and really stalky.
It isn't that the hay is bad for them, I just prefer more leafy blades instead of the hard stems, and my pigs seem to agree. I also get more for my money with the online ordered stuff.
You definately should feed kaytee hay, over no hay at all. Pigs need hay.
Pellets are another story. I will (and occasionally do) go without pellets at all, before I feed Hartz or Kaytee brand pellets.

Re: Is kaytee timothy hay ok?

Of all the brands I've seen in local pet supply stores, Kaytee is usually the greenest. My pigs like it just fine, and have gone months with just eating that type of hay. I do find a lot of dust at the bottom of the bags, though, which isn't such a big deal, but I feel like I'm not getting the full weight of hay I paid for.

I just bought box of Oxbow timothy hay, and the difference is amazing. I opened the box and the whole room smells sweet and it is so green. It works out to be a little more expensive, but maybe not since there is no dust, so much less waste. I'll see how long the 9 pound box lasts. If I go buy the even bigger boxes, it works out to be a better deal.

That's what I've found too. But you just don't get what you pay for with those tiny bags. Actually, all the Oxbow hay I've seen in stores looks far worse than the Kaytee.

But I'm an exclusive KM's Hayloft buyer now. Her hay is da bomb!

Re: Is kaytee timothy hay ok?

I really think it has to do with how long it sits on the shelf. We have a brand of Hay here that lots of people have trouble with. My store has trouble keeping it on the shelf so its always fresh because it is on constant order. So look at the bag and see what it looks like, if it looks good I would say no problem. Your store might just be able to rotate it more than other stores.
