Feeding.

Recently I started feeding one of my girls by hand. She is housed with two other girls and gets along great with them. Well I noticed during when they get their salads she doen't come out at all to eat. So I recently been taking her aside to feed her myself so she gets everything. I was wondering how long I should be doing this. I feed her one leaf of romaine, one baby carrot, some peppers(red, green and yellow), and every once in awhile cucumbers and celery. Thanks for the help.

Re: Feeding.

Maybe she is the submissive pig and isn't comfortable joining the pile with the others?
I would try giving her a separate little pile of her own, near the opening of whatever hidey she is in, to help coax her out.

Re: Feeding.

Well, that's what I actually tried doing at first. She hides in the hidey house during food time and I have two food dishes. One for the two other girls and then I try setting the other one in front of her. But supposedly one of my greedy pigs thinks her is better than what she is eating and goes. I've also tried handing her some veggies inside the hidey house and then she eats it but I'm never sure what she gets. That's why I have been hand feeding. And I wasn't sure how long I'm supposed to do it this way.

Re: Feeding.

hehe Yeah, pigs are jealous and greedy. Most of the time at night I will sit in the floor with the door my cage open and hand feed a few veggies to my boars before I put their pile in (got a couple I am trying to tame down more). I will give one a piece of lettuce and then hand another a piece, and the first pig will spit his out and run to see what I gave the other pig. Even after I put their pile in, one will hang around wanting hand fed, and the others can't stand it, they will leave the pile to come back to get fed. Brats.

I don't use bowls for veggies with the boars because it always results in one pig sitting IN the bowl to hoard it all. I have gotten where I line veggies on the floor along a wall of the cage so everyone has to line up and eat--rather than everyone gathering around with one pigs butt planted in the lettuce. IT works better for us.

If she isn't willing to join the others and eat, she has to get the goods somehow. If you can't continue to hand feed her, you might try lining the veggies along a wall like I do, or hide piles in several spots in the cage, or maybe even just using a grid to block that one piggy off by herself with her veggies each night.
