Question about Pellets My girls are only about 10 weeks old and about 400 grams each... could I start buying them timothy choice pellets or should go with alfalfa pellets for a while. Just something I was wondering, because This weekend is when I'm doing my big purchases for my girls.

Re: Question about Pellets Thanks guys. I always see that type of aspen bedding around hear, however Kaytee hasnt really been a favorite around here, and I wasnt sure if it was just preferance or if it was because it was poor quality.

Re: Question about Pellets Go with the Oxbow Cavy Performance. KM's Hayloft also has great pellets.

Re: Question about Pellets If you are going to use bedding such as shavings, check out a local feed store for kiln/heat dried pine. You will get double the shavings for half the price.

Re: Question about Pellets We had a short discussion about Kaytee Timothy Complete pellets here a few days ago: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...rebuild-2.html The pellets contain preservatives that cause cancer. The kaytee hay is OK, I just don't like the way it is filled with so many stalks and not so many leafy pieces. I would still use it if I were ever in a pinch, but since seeing how nuts my pigs go over KM hay and how leafy it is, it is just my #1 choice now. Kaytee aspen is fine. I have used it many many times. I don't have any problem with their pig friendly beddings. Ditto JDO on the kiln dried pine. I was able to get it at the local feed store for 4.00 and change a bag and it was a huge bag. It was enough to change out (2) 2x4 cages almost twice. It would have been plenty enough to do the cages twice but I used a lot of it, as I liked the bedding to be deep. Oxbow hay I haven't personally used, but many here give it a thumbs up, and if it is any comparable to KM hay it must be good. If you can find a suitable pellet that is Timothy based near you, it would be fine to feed. You would just need to supplement the girls diet daily with something calcium rich such as alfalfa hay or sprouts, parsley, or kale. Me and my piggies despise alfalfa hay, it is just way too hard and stalky, but they LOVE alfalfa sprouts (looks like a container of growing grass without soil on the roots)--I buy it periodically in the deli dept at walmart as a treat. If you wind up ordering online, you may as well order alfalfa base to make your life easier.
