Too Much Hay??

I've been told before that too much hay can be bad for guinea pigs and give them UTI's.

Everyone here seems to give their piggies so much, so now I'm questioning whether it's true.

My guinea LOVES hay, but I was always afraid to give her too much because of the things I had heard.

Is this true?

Re: Too Much Hay??

Urinary Tract Infections from hay? What I've read around is that older pigs (like your Layla) can't have Alfalfa hay except as a very occasional treat because alfalfa hay has a lot of calcium and that causes bladder stones and/or sludge. You can and should give her unlimited Timothy Hay. There's also other hays which you can give in unlimited quantities and won't cause any problems such as Kleenmama's bluegrass hay. I'll be ordering it and some timothy for my bunny and future pig/s and it's VERY highly reccomended.

Re: Too Much Hay??

Guinea pigs should have unlimited hay, I give mine unlimited timothy hay, and they also get some orchard grass when ever I pick it up.

Re: Too Much Hay??

That's so crazy! I was told that after I got Layla a long time ago. Some chick (who acted as if she knew a LOT about guinea pigs) told me not to give her too much hay!

But maybe she MEANT alfalfa hay.

I use Kaytee Timothy Hay...so I can give her as much as she wants of that?
MAN! I always limit her because I don't want her to get an infection.

Re: Too Much Hay??

Man oh man... I always felt so mean because she always ate the CRAP out of her hay. And I didn't want to give her to much.

Now I'm going to have to be a good mother and spoil her rotten with some hay before I go to bed. She will be so happy.

Re: Too Much Hay??

Here, check out this link: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...mamas-hay.html. It's a thread I started asking for pictures of Kleenmama's hay. Look how YUMMY it looks! I'll spend about 65 dollars for shipping a 35 pound box of half 3rd cut timothy and half bluegrass hay and I think it's totally worth it! Don't worry, I don't think you'll have to spend that much because you don't live in a very far away small island like I do.

Re: Too Much Hay??

Just making sure Kaytee is okay. I know a lot of people are not very fond of petstore brand foods.

so I just want to make sure she can eat endless amounts of kaytee tim. hay

whoa. that stuff is odd looking. but layla would LOVE it.

where can I buy that? It seems like everything that everyone suggests (oxbow, etc) is only available online.

its hard for me to order things online, I have a very small mailbox at my apartment. All boxes and big shipments get sent to my leasing office where there is rarely anyone in there.

so its hard for me to order large items from the internet.

Re: Too Much Hay??

Omigosh haha! You post so fast! Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home is where you can get the hay. Petstore foods are full of icky things, but hay is hay anywhere. It's just the quality that varies. However a LOT of people here say Kleenmama's is the best quality hay ever. I haven't seen the Kaytee but I can bet it's not better than Kleenmama's!

Edit-

Can't you ask someone to notify you as soon as the package arrives? I know that dad orders books and stuff from the U.S. and the delivery guy comes over in a truck and honks until you go down or someone tells him that no one's home.

Re: Too Much Hay??

Im also excited because I found a vet that also sees exotic pets that's only 12 minutes away from my apartment.

does it matter if it's a vet that sees all kinds of pets or is it better to go to one that's solely dedicated to exotic pets?

Re: Too Much Hay??

Kaytee food is crap, but the hay should be o.k. to use. Guinea pigs need an exotic vet, a normal vet won't know much about them.
(A little off topic but,) What kind of food do you use?
