What's the feed stores name, and where is it? You can PM me the answer if you don't want to write it in this thread. $6 is a good price for a bale of hay, but I might order from Kleema anyways just to try her hay out. Shipping may be less for me because I live very close to where KM lives. 35lbs of hay to be shipped costs $10, 45lbs $11 for shipping. I think that is resonable since I just ordered a few toys and cage diapers (for the piggies) from the critter store and shipping cost $36.99. Which is rediculous!! I mean really how much can those toys and cage diapers possibly weigh?!!?

Everyone has been saying how cheap her stuff is, but it looks like I can get about 4x more hay for half the price at this feed store. Any ideas/suggestions?
Feed stores are much cheaper, yes, but this is as cheap as it gets online. If you can't find a reliable source of cheap hay, this is the way to go. If you can, though, go for it!!!

I haven't had enough time to tell which they like better (it's only been one week), but since I got half and half I am able to try both. The timmy is going great, and the bluegrass is as well. They have a tendency to go for the bluegrass just a bit faster than the timmy. I don't know which they like for sure. I'd suggest half of each, as their tastes are all different. Oh, and don't worry about the questions, I'm happy to answer as always. =)

Ok I am thinking of going with the bluegrass (because I can get mini bales of timothy for $3.99). Is there a limit on how much bluegrass hay they should have? I will need a lot of hay any way because I use it for my quail during the winter (they live in a run outside I will use the bluegrass if the pigs don't like it.) I will order some as soon as KM comes back from vacation.

There is not a limit to how much bluegrass, brome, orchard grass, or timmy they get--it's just alfalfa that you've got to worry about. You're going to love the hay (or at least the pigs will!)

Oh, and for anyone who is even thinking of buying her hay, I found a thread on GuineaLynx about it: http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/vi...kleenmamas+hay

Holy cow! you have great prices near you. In So.Cal. they charge about $20 for a bale. I went to look at it today but was disappointed with the timothy. It had been out in the sun and was very stiff, dried and yellow. I ended up getting a bale of orchard grass instead as it was softer and greener. The bummer is that on the way home I realized I don't like the smell. Timothy smells great but orchard grass kind of makes me nauseous. Oh well - at least it was cheap. If I can't stand it, it's no big loss to give it away to someone and go back to Kleenmama's.

Sounds great, tell me how the piggies like the hay! I tried orchard grass from Oxbow once, but I didn't really like the smell either. I don't think the pigs were too happy with me; they didn't eat much at all. Oh, well--it was worth a try.

Pigs loved it - dug right in the moment it was in their cage. And the smell's not so bad when there's just some in their cage. In the car when it was 102 degrees outside, it was HORRIBLE!

At the stable where I got it they charged exactly the same for Timothy and Orchard Grass. With tax it was about $23 a bale.

Hmmm... maybe Oxbow's orchard grass hay just didn't suit my pigs. The value of the orchard grass is usually about the same as timmy is.

Compared to the person that got a whole bale for $6, yeah.

However, compared to pet store prices or online shipping charges, it's still a great bargain. I could probably drive to some rural area and get it cheaper but then I'm spending money on gas. I live in the heart of Orange County where the people who own horses live in multi-million dollar homes so I guess that's just the going rate around here. Considering that this hay will last me 6-12 months, that's not really much to pay.

Where the heck I'm going to keep it is another problem. It's about 32 cu.ft. of hay which is HUGE!
