How much food to order?

Hi, I'm new here and hope that this is the right place to post this question. I am hoping to adopt 2 guinea pigs soon, and right now I am in the process of getting everything ready--cage, good hay and pellets, bedding etc. Materials for my cage are coming and I am going to order food and hay form KM soon. I am planning on ordering 25 lbs of timothy from KM and I am wondering how much food should I order so it will last about as long as the hay. From what I've read, it seems like 25 lbs of hay would last 2 pigs about 5 months. Please correct me if I am wrong, I have not been able to find much info on amount of hay they need. I know they need 1/8 to 1/4 cup of pellets per day, so that makes about 1/2 cup per day for 2 pigs. So, how many cups are in a pound? Anybody have a good estimate?

Thanks so much!!

Re: How much food to order?

1/8 cups of pellets per pig per day is just fine along with unlimited timothy hay and a cup of veggies per pig aday. I have four pigs and it took them about one and a half months to go through 10 pounds of pellets at 1/8 cup of pellets per pig a day. So it'd probably take two pigs almost 3 months to go through 10 pounds of pellets.
I hope this helps! Good luck with your piggers.

Re: How much food to order?

I have 4lbs of KM's pellets lasting just over 2 weeks for 4 pigs, and I give 3/4 cup daily for the 4 of them. That gives them just over 1/8 cup and just under 1/4 cup each. If I had to guess, I'd say that 4lbs would last you twice as long since you have half as many pigs, so 4lbs per month or so. That way, if my calculations are correct, a 25lb bag of pellets would last you about 6 months. If you have the freezer space, I highly recommend getting as large a bag as you can easily store, split it into freezer bags, and freeze what you won't use in a 2 weeks to a month span. Take the next bag out to come to room temperature a couple days before you will need them. The pellets will easily last at least 6 months in the freezer.

Re: How much food to order?

Sloansmom, OK Feeds, on Ft. Lowell and Dodge used to sell a good timothy pellet in 5lb to 25 lbs. For the last 2 months they have not had it. I have been fighting with them over and over plus calling everyday. I ordered KM timothy pellets when OK Feeds kept giving me the run around. They do sell a good bale of timothy hay. I have called every feed store in Tucson and OK Feeds were the only one selling timothy pellets. (except Carters and they were horse timothy pellets.) The alfafa pellets have the perservitive that causes cancer in it. They also sell timothy hay. There are only 2 feeds stores that sell timothy hay. Ok Feeds and Carters. On Wetmore and Flowing Wells. Do not buy timothy pellets from Carters. They are horse talblets ( they are HUGE) and only 2 out of 11 pigs will eat them. Janet's pigs aren't fond of them either. The timothy hay is in at Ok and Carters. My pigs and rabbits love the hay and eat tons of it.
Any questions? Feel free to send me a private message.

Re: How much food to order?

Thank you so much SLP!!! The rescue lady is going to bring me 25 lbs of Mazuri plain pellets when she brings the pigs. I will definetly remember that for next time I need food though. It will save so much for shipping and I am always in Tucson, anyway. Thanks again!

I knew you could do that with dog food, but I didn't know you could with guinea pig pellets. Hmmm, very interesting.
