Question Hay from ebay?

Shipping for oxbow hay and km's hay is really expensive for me. So I thought I would look on ebay just for the heck of it. I found this: eBay: 12 Lb. PREMIUM Timothy "HAY-IN-A-BOX" From FARMER DAVE (item 170027843768 end time Sep-15-06 19:24:49 PDT)
As anyone ever bought this hay? Does this look like good quality hay? He sells up to 37 lbs and as little as 1 lb. Thanks

Re: Hay from ebay?

I think for just the little bit of extra money KM is well worth the difference. How many pigs do you have--could you order a 25lb box than it would be cheaper in the long run.

By the time you calculate the shipping into the asking price, that hay is even pretty high for only 12lbs.

Have you ever bought KM? Trust me when I say I would not promote something that I did not like, but her hay is the BEST I have ever seen in my life. It is a bit more money because of the shipping (I am zone 8), but I really think it is cheaper in the long run...let me explain. The bluegrass stems a longer, they are all of the same grass, no weeds, therefore your pigs do not waste as much hay as they normally would. Mine grab a piece and chew when they used to grab a piece, take a bite and trade the piece in for another better tasting one. The grass itself is so long that it does not fall all over the ground out of hay rack when the pigs pull out a piece, or even when you refill it. That truly is something to consider. I know when I used to buy Oreo (my first pig) cheaper hay a whole lot was wasted on the ground that he either picked through and did not want, or it was smaller more dustier pieces that just took up room in the bag to begin with.

Re: Hay from ebay?

I know there are a couple of people who have bought Farmer Dave's products in the past. Email him, and see if he offers samples. Good customer service would indicate that he should for possibly only a small shipping fee. If you decide to order from him, make sure you don't get the 2nd cut with clover that he has listed. Clover can be quite high in calcium.

Personally, I agree with WEAVER that KM is totally the way to go as far as mail order hay goes.

Re: Hay from ebay?

I had received hay from farmer Dave myself and found that it was definitely not as good as KMS hayloft hay. The shipping is more but it's worth every penny. As the old saying goes.... you get what you pay for.

Re: Hay from ebay?

I had great results with frmdave. The hay was green with really broad leaves and few stems. It smells sweeter than KM's. He ships really fast too. Also, his apple sticks are a big hit with my piggies. I only get KM's because after shipping and everthing, it's cheaper.

Re: Hay from ebay?

Farmer Dave's hay is very spotty. You can get an excellent batch one shipment, and a crappy batch the next. I was ordering from him for a while due to his lower shipping prices (which he has since raised), but stopped after getting a 25lb. box of timothy that was dusty and yellow. I ended up tossing it out.

Really, for the small difference in cost, KMS is so much better. I currently use Oxbow, but only because our local pet food store owner (not a pet shop) is giving me free 25 lb. boxes in trade for the website I'm building for her. Once that's depleted, though, I'll most likely go back to using Kleenmama hay.

My girls absolutely love his apple sticks. We just got the twigs the first time, and this last time, we got an apple stick chew toy and just the sticks. So far, they love them as much as the first order.

Re: Hay from ebay?

Well, I have decided to go ahead and order pellets and hay from KM. It is pricey but I know it is the best for my piggies. I have one more question, I am going to get 35 lbs of 1/2 timothy and 1/2 bluegrass. It turns out that I won't be storing the hay in the shed but inside because the shed is pretty full and isn't that secure against rain. Will 35 lbs of hay be too much to store in a bedroom? Does KM ship the hay in just a large cardboard box?

Re: Hay from ebay?

The hay will come in a cardboard box. Inside the box I believe there will be two large garbage bags (one with each type of hay), but in order to let the hay breathe better, remove the hay from the garbage bags. I store my KM's hays inside the house. One box is in my bedroom and one is in the front bedroom. My last order was 100lbs (45lbs. of bluegrass and 55lbs. of timothy) and I got two boxes, one with 3rd cut timothy and the other is the blue orchard grass.
