How long?

Just wanted to know on average it would take 2 dutch rabbits and 2 guinea pigs (kept separately) to eat 18KG of timothy hay? Obviously as they have unlimited access to it, it is a bit hard to tell. Was hoping someone had a rough estimate because of their animals.

Re: How long?

Um, let me think. I got a 22kg box of Oxbow timothy and my piggers took about 7 months to get through it, but that was with quite a lot of wasteage because they likr to sit in a heap of it. If I'd just put it in the hayrack it probably would have lasted twice as long. Hope that helps.

A word of warning though, my pigs have gotten hay mites, and I just opened their new 22kg box of hay and they'd been eating it for about 3 days before the vet saw them. As a result I can't be sure that the mites didn't come from the new hay, so the whole lot has to be thrown out and I am so pissed. I bought the biggest box because it worked out cheaper, but it turned out to be a false economy. Please don't think that there's anything wrong with oxbow hay. Hay mites can be present in any hay, and it's pure bad lauck if they happen to be in a bag or box that you buy. I'm going to buy another (smaller) box of oxbow.

Re: How long?

I have 6 pigs and I go through roughly 50 lbs of hay every 5-6 months (depending on how yummy they think it is, and how much they waste)

Re: How long?

I buy 10 pounds of hay at a time and it takes my 5 pigs about 2 weeks to a month to finish it.

Re: How long?

I bought a 40 ounce bag of hay from Oxbow and it lasted me about a month. That's about 2 weeks including Penney though. I got her about two weeks after buying it. I ordered somemore, but now I'm waiting for it, and giving them Kaytee as a substitute for now.
