Question Where do you buy your hay?

Hello. Well I usually get long bags of Timothy hay but I was wondering if there bigger bags that last longer. I was just wondering how big you buy your bags of hay at and where you get them. Thanks.

Re: Where do you buy your hay?

I buy hay in a large bale from the local feedstore (Bermuda grass hay) or I buy hay from www.kmshayloft.com. The last order I placed with KM, I bought 100lbs. of hay and am still using it. I probably have 40-50lbs. still left.

KM has the finest quality hay around and overall it may seem expensive due to the shipping costs but in the end it's cheaper by the pound even with shipping than what people pay for small bags of crappy hay at the store. You can order 9lbs., 25lbs. or 35lbs. through KM or you can do specialty orders like I did for large amounts of hay.

Re: Where do you buy your hay?

Thanks so much. I think it would be so much easier buying a large amount then keep on buying small packages. Thanks and I will look into it more and most likely purchase some. Thanks!

Re: Where do you buy your hay?

It really will be cheaper in the end if you buy a bale. Before I moved back home, I couldn't find the hay I needed (even though I lived in an agricultural area) so I had to buy small bags of Oxbow from the co-op at 5.99 a bag. Once I moved home, I bought a bale of bermuda for about 8 dollars, and I've yet to make a dent in it. I stored most of it in my shed, where it stays dry and out-of-the-way, and I keep a bucket of hay in the pig room. I haven't even refilled the bucket yet, so this bale is going to last forever.

Re: Where do you buy your hay?

Oh. One more question. How much does the shipping cost or is it included with the price it shows?

Re: Where do you buy your hay?

For shipping, you have to figure out what zone you are in and look up the shipping price for your zone. It's not included in the price.

Re: Where do you buy your hay?

We buy twenty bales at a time from our local feed store. No, its not all for the pigs LOl, We have cattle and alapacas as well. That much hay lasts about a month between 9 alpacas, 9 cattle and the pigs.

But it is much cheaper if you buy by the bale, I know you can get a biscuit of hay for $10 from the pet store or a bale(14 biscuits) for $20 from the feedstore. Well those are the pricings down here.

Re: Where do you buy your hay?

That signup on KM's site just makes it easier if you think you're going to be ordering fairly often. It holds onto your address, so you don't have to type it in every time.

Re: Where do you buy your hay?

I used to think of guinea pigs as somewhat of a childs pet. Then someone I know had one who had babies. There was a male baby who they could not keep and he was placed in my hands. Well, the little guy looked up at me with his dark eyes and snuggled up against my chest and sort of stole my heart.

After living with the baby for a few months and learning everything I could on the internet I built a largerer cage and found a male of a suitable age up for adoption to keep him company. Thus Harry entered our life.

Cavies are definately not like hamsters or gerbils, they require a lot of care and attention and have tons of personality. I have Harry talk to the guys on line to teach them about cavies and help educate them.

In real life he lives with his cage brother in a large cage and eats organically grown vegetables, Kleenmama's hay and timothy pellets. He does a fantastic job of keeping me company. In the virtual world he is mayor of a small town inhabited by veterans. He is a very busy boy in both worlds.

Re: Where do you buy your hay?

I feed my Chinchillas (26), Cavies (3) and Rabbit hay from Hay and Feed for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Prairie Dogs, Chinchillas . Fed Owbow for a bit when I first got into Chinchillas, but the chins didn't like it. Not fresh, and a ton of hard stems no one wanted to eat. Wasted. Timothy Gold hay from APD is mostly leaves and ALOT fresher. Everyone gobbles it up! They have awesome pellets, too.
