Hay

Which hay is the best for piggies and where can you purchase it? Is the Timothy hay at pet stores ok? (I probably shouldn't even mention the words pet store, huh?)

Re: Hay

Farms and feed stores are where many get their hay from. Pet store hay is fine as long as it is of good quality.

As for types, alfalfa is generally for pigs under 6 months and for pregnant/nursing sows. Timothy and other grass hays are great for any aged piggy.

Re: Hay

Hay at pet stores in generally lower quality like LM or Hartz hay. The best place to purchase hay is www.kmshayloft.com, though it is costly for some. I buy my hay from www.bunnybale.com. Other places are www.oxbow.com and www.sweetmeadowfarm.com.

You can also try and purchase hay from feed stores that sell horse hay by the bale. These are generally of an acceptable quality, though you want to make sure it is good smelling, green, free of mold, and soft.
