Question Question about taking piggies outside.

I have two wonderful guinea pigs and a few more pets. Our familly dog goes outside to do his bussiness, (poop, pee) I heard that there is a diease that piggies can get if they eat grass where a wild animal has made their droppings? So my question is is it safe if it's only our dog who makes his droppings in our yard and he is healthy. Also we pick his droppings up often, or at least before the piggies go out. Are my piggies save if they eat the grass around it, not the poop? Please help, thank you.

Re: Question about taking piggies outside.

Sorry I don't have a clue. I'm assuming that it'll be ok as long as they don't get around your dog's poo. Just make sure you stay w/ them and that its not too hot, too cold or too windy. Good luck!!

Re: Question about taking piggies outside.

I avoid taking my pigs out onto the grass because I have no idea where my dogs pee. It's easy enough to know where they have pooped, but pee could be anywhere. Cordon off an area of your garden so that your dogs can't get to it and leave the grass for a few months. Then you just go to the cordoned off bit to let the pigs eat the grass there.

Re: Question about taking piggies outside.

I just let my pigs eat grass in the front yard, then I don't have to worry about my dog Does your dog go in your front yard?

Re: Question about taking piggies outside.

If your dog isn't too big, you might want to try fencing off a small area of your backyard for your piggers and water the grass everyday for a couple of weeks. That should clean up whatever your pup might have left behind. Otherwise, you can always cable tie a few extra cube grids together as a play pen and bring it out into the front yard since your dog doesn't go there. Attach a water bottle to the side, through in a few toys and a shadey hidey spot and instant play yard!

Re: Question about taking piggies outside.

Here the front yard is run by our nieghboring cats, so I think no matter where a person goes there will be something from some animal - birds, mice, cats, dogs, etc. The safest is probably to do as others have said and section off an area just for your precious piggies.

Also watch that you don't have any pesticides or lawn chemicals...wouldn't want to poison them!
