Question Is it safe?

I have a cage that has a upper deck on it. It connects a ramp from the ground to the upper deck. The upper deck is not that high from the lower floor. It is only like 1 foot or 1/2 a foot. My Guinea Pig does not go up the ramp, She jumps up on the upper deck. Do you think it is safe for her? What should I do?

I have tryed putting trails of food going up the ramp. She grabed the Carrots and ran. I have even tryed guiding her up the ramp and she jumps right off. I dont think it is that safe and I don't know what to do.

Re: Is it safe?

You could make a "guardrail" for the ramp somehow. How big is your cage, and how steep is the ramp?

Re: Is it safe?

Piggies' backs are not made for jumping and, although many can and do, it's not really safe. You could put a railing of some kind along the top level to prevent jumping.

Re: Is it safe?

The cage is 7.5 square feet. Enough for 1-2 piggys. The ramp is not steep at all, It is just tilted a little. Should I make it steeper or not?

Re: Is it safe?

Probably not steeper. If it is a C&C cage just add grids along the ledge. If not, show us a picture and we might be able to come up with other ideas.

Re: Is it safe?

Okay, Thank you. I do not have no more connectors or grids. I gave them away to my friend who was also getting a guinea pig. I'm not able to post pictures at this moment. My camera seems not to work. I'm trying to figure it out right this moment accutley!

Are you using C&C? If the loft is on a 1 grid high, it's 14" and it's not safe if they fall. If your loft is about half the grid or lower, it's ok. I have a bunkbed that's 6" high off the floor. They jump up and down all the time.

I am using a 7.5 square feet pet store cage. I got it from a special super pet market. The cage is new and never been used. The cage is very large. The ramp is really only like 4-6" off the floor. I am just worried that she will hurt her back.

Re: Is it safe?

You can make a guard rail out of cardboard, that's what I did with my last ramp attempt... just tape it to underneath the ramp and attach it to the grids up top (I hope that the second story is closed off?) using wire.

I also had wire running from the top of the first story grid, over the ramp, and attaching to the cardboard but I wouldn't recommend that unless you're 110% sure that your pigs can't chew on it.
