Hello, Yesterday I bought the materials for a C&C cage and I built it the best I could, except I have 3 cats and a pug and a chihuahua and I don't think it will be safe enough. So I have decided I will use a storebougt cage for them to sleep in and a C&C cage for them to run around and play in! I wanted to know your oppinion onthis. Thanks! |

You can use extra grids to make a stand and use wire closet shelves to make a lid. See these galleries. Closed Cages - Guinea Pig Cage Photos Stands - Guinea Pig Cage Photos |

How exactly do you make a lid that's easy to open? |

If you make a 'lid' for the C&C cage that should be enough protection, just use tons of zip ties and use them to make 'hinges' on the back and maybe clips on the front so you can open and close it easily but also secure enough that that the kitties couldn't open it either. |

If you use zipties to fasted your grids and make a lid out of more grids and zipties or wire shelving the C&C cage should definitely be safe enough. I understand your concern because I have a very energetic and curious dog and a very curious and "Hungry" Cat, but she cant do anything beyond sticking a paw in the cage... Both animals try vigorusly to get in sometimes but they can't,also, C&c cages are sturdier than they look. I often have to lean right into it and it holds my weight quite well (thats about 100 displaced pounds) Give the Zip ties a try if you havent already. |

Look through the gallery of closed cages for ideas. Get shelving unit cut to size. It should swing open easily. Or make a front opening door. |

I think C&C cages are stronger than petstore cage. I've read that some people put their new pig in petstore cage and the pig got killed by a dog because the dog was able to rip open the petstore cage. |

God the idea of other animals getting into the innocent piggie cage and-- well I can't think about it, it makes me ill. I used to feel sorry for chickens that foxes got but this is infinitely worse. From watching YouTube clips I had gotten the idea that cats think guinea pigs are just kittens, and bathe them and tolerate their nibbling. But I guess they have to learn to be with piggies from birth or they will become piggie-predators. Please build the cage strong and with a lid, as the people are telling you. Even I can see how to make a hinged lid with zip-ties and that shelving stuff. That's for the cat. And to keep them safe from the mad hamster-eating pug, put the cage up on a table unreachable by the canine. |
