Is it Safe?: rubber mats?

I'm preparing myself for a guinea I plan to adopt this september. I'm going to build a 2x3 c&c cage and use fleece. For areas where a hayrack will be and water, I thought of maybe buying one of those rubber mats you put under the sink strainer in the kitchen or something similar so that hay doesnt get all stuck to the fleece and the water doesnt drip everywhere. Does it sound safe? or do you think it'd harm the piggy if he/she chewed on it?
