Our newest rescue has a tendency to get overexcited when we come over with lettuce, and she will actually get all four feet hooked onto the grid wall like a mountain climber. She climbs there with the happy, mistaken promise that the higher she gets to the cage-ceiling, the quicker she'll get fed. She even presses the cover up with her nose to try and get higher! This is fully safe, as it's not that high of a grid compared to her (she's rather dexterous) but we're planning to remove all of the cage covers soon. We are worried that without the cover, she might forget herself and in her haste climb right out of the cage. That would be a pretty bad fall, and we don't want that! Is this a valid concern, and should we keep her cage covered just in case? Her cage-mate won't like that very much (they actually prefer the cages uncovered for some reason). This pig is like Spider-woman! |

My Bob does that also. I usually leave his cage cover open and he doesn't go up any farther than just peeking his head over. I always think it is cute because he does it every morning too just to say "Hi" to us when we get up. |

In my opinion I would leave it on. It only takes one time for him to climb a little too far and it to have a very bad ending. Good luck with what you decide. |

One of my pigs, Marmite does this too. He even climbed into his hayrack. |

Wow, they can climb the side of the cage? I didn't know they could manage to do that. I would leave the cover on, because she could fall out of the cage and get injured or worse. |

Does your cage not have coroplast walls? Or are they really short? If you add 6" coroplast walls, I don't think she would be able to climb the grids. If you choose not to do that, I would use a top. |
