Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0
Ok, so I read the sticky about Target's new grids and guess where I ended up having to buy my new grids?! I opened the box and there are 10 or 11 regular "safe" grids and the rest are the the dangerous ones. For my purposes this actually works and the price was good. I am using the "dangerous" grids for staggered applications like hay racks (staggered 3, the openings are about 3/4" wide when staggered this way), and the center divider that will go between the sows and boars. Just figured I'd let you know it CAN be done as long as you are mindful of making it safe for your piggies. I was fully prepared to take them back if I couldn't make them work and buy online, but I spent 4 hours last night working with it and am very happy with the results and not at all afraid of injuries or death. Just be prepared to have lots of cable ties on hand, 4" and 8". |

Just be mindful of any chewing on the zipties that were used to stagger the grids. But I agree, they can have uses especially as cage stands or cage floors where the pigs would have no access to the grids. |

Not all the target grids are bad. I got the silver ones and they all have 9 squares. |

The new boxes of black grids from Target call Organize It are just fine for C&C cages. They have 14 grids that are the bad kind or 5 squares wide but those can be used for the underside of the cage and work just fine. The coroplast does it's job in making a barrier so I don't see anything wrong with using them. There are also 9 grids with 8 squares across instead of 9 and they still work just fine. The difference in the space isn't that much that I don't think there is much of a need to worry about it. I have a double level cage for my guys and these grids are the only one I used and we haven't had any problems with them. Of course, do prepare for buying way more grids than you're going to need because one set of 9 safe grids isn't going to do it even if you're using the bad ones for the base. |

The ones with eight openings are dangerous. The difference may not seem like a lot to the human eye, but it is enough to be a choking hazard for guinea pigs. Read about it here on Guinea Pig Cages and on Guinea Lynx. The 8 holed grids need to be staggered as if you were babyproofing. |
