Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I was just wondering as I notice most C&C cages are open top, is escape an issue? I heard mostly it's an issue with new babies as they're tiny enough to go through the holes in the grids, he's 8 months though and with his girth I doubt he could fit through grid holes . Is this an issue of concern when I get my C&C cage? Thanks. |

Most pigs are not jumpers or climbers, but there is the rare one that can easily escape. I only had a topless cage for a few weeks, and when he stood up on bars, he could put his head over the top, but he never escaped. I have to have tops because of the cats, though. So, it's rare but can happen. |

Like PrayerWarrior, I have witnessed my piggies stretch and put their heads over the top of the grid but never jump out. I did however make the top level a closed top and I extended the grids on the bottom level to make it higher because I noticed that my piggies pop the pigloos and wooden tunnels all over the cage and when they get the pigloos or the tunnels near the wall of the cage they jump on top of them and I'm pretty sure in that case that can get out. Closed top or open top, depends on your piggies. |

No, most pigs are fine in open tops. There are the occaisional ones who do climb, and would require a top. Any un-fixed males next to females need a lid or partial lid on their cage as they have been known to climb the divider. |

I have grids on top of the areas that concern me... over the "hammock" corner, over the kitchen, and over their bunk bed, since they all have elevated "things" that they could potentially jump over the grid wall if they chose to. At one point, I had some fleece just draped over one of the corners to create a cave, and the little booger Lt. Dan jumped up onto it and started climbing out because I was hiding veggies. So I don't do that anymore (draped fleece, that is... they love hidden veggies). |

I have never had a problem with the piggies trying to escape. I have one that will move the pigloo over to the hay and then jump onto the pigloo to eat the hay on top. I have even found her on the hayrack...which means she probably used the pigloo to jump onto the top of the hayrack. However, she has never jumped out of the cage. I'm pretty sure they all know that they would be jumping away from food if they tried to get out of the cage. That alone, is motivation for all the piggies to stay put. |

My top was open on my cage until my little guinea pig who wasn't even a pound learned how to climb on top of his house and onto my bed. I would watch him just laying in my covers, while the other big one had no clue! I would put a lid on it!!! |

I have a new male baby, and when I seperate him in about 2 more weeks I plan on putting a top on his side. I am scared to death he will get in with the females..... |

I have never had a C&C cage with a top and have never had an escape. I have had lots of piggies, I don't even know for sure how many so it is a rare thing for them to jump over. But it is possible. |
