C&C cage can't be put outside!

Searching "guinea pigs" led me to see people who want guinea pigs for other purpose. And there were many of those people. I also found out that there are live feed delivery service that sometimes delivers genetically defective guinea pigs to your home.

Anyway, those movies showed me, that small snakes which can enter C&C grid or chicken wire can feed on guinea pigs.

I was thinking about making a "Safe" outdoor play house for my pigs with the chicken wire. I am sure and hope that other people are not as stupid as I am.

I have a playpen out of grids, and the girls are fine out there. I just watch them.

I thought it would be okay to let them play for few hours while I don't watch out, in the "Safe" cage that I was planning.

Justin, no matter what (and this goes for everybody else), you can never leave a prey animal outside with no supervision.

Pigs for life...can you elaborate on the outside playpen? How big is it? Is there a bottom? That sounds very interesting to me. Thanks!

Well you should not leave your guinea pigs unsupervised or unwatched to allow a snake to crawl in. However if you did want an easy way to make sure no unnoticed small critters got into the cage just get a roll of screen door mesh (I recommend the aluminum over the black carbonate) and use very small zip ties or wire to attach it on the outside of the grids. I once tried it to keep bedding from flying out http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/P1010047.jpg. It works but wasn't worth the effort for very large cages that I kept redesigning.

robin - I just cable-tied some grids together. The same grids you use to make a C&C cage. No bottom, as they eat the grass. No top either, not needed as I sit outside and watch them. It is a 4x4.

Lucky you dont have to worry about CB-Birds Of Prey, but it would concern me about wild birds of prey.

Re: C&C cage can't be put outside!

I never seen a bird of prey here, until one day, I saw fifteen vultures over a dead cat, coming out of, well, blue sky.

But I think it will be alright with supervision. Bird will never dare to a human. When I said "no outside", I meant without human.

Re: C&C cage can't be put outside!

We use a c&c cage without top or bottom for outside time. At all times though, either me or my husband is watching the pigs just in case. My daughter loves to jump on trampoline or play on swingset, so since it's warm now everyone gets to enjoy outside time in the evenings. My husband laughed today and said he's never known me to sit outside so much until the pigs came along.

Haven't seen that vid on funniest home videos have you? A kid and his dad were outside with the kid's pet mouse that was sitting on top of the cage. The kid was right next to the mouse when a hawk swoops down and grabs it. Birds of prey will go near humans in order to grab small animals. They have no problem with it.

aqh88 is right plus it does happen so fast! It dosent take the birds long to make a plan and swoop down.
