Question Chewing

My hubby and I just built a new cage for our piggys Polly and Puffy, we have not been able to find coroplast, and decided to use linoleum as flooring until we are able to get it locally. We know the cage is at least 99% safe as is, we used grid pannels as the bottom also and lined the bottom with the lino, but the pigs want to chew on the lino and I can't find anywhere on the site or in the forums how to piggy proof the lino floor. Please help!!!

Re: Chewing

I'm not sure that I am qualified to answer this... but what I did in my cage was line the bottom with an all weather tarp. Made it into kind of a cupcake idea to cover the bottom and then clipped the edges up to the grids with binder clips. I could not find chloroplast and do not have a lot of money to spend on other things. They dont seem to chew the fabric at all. (they chew everything else tho)

Re: Chewing

I use corflute/coroplast, and my girls chew it. No problem really, if you are worried you can try spreading a bit of apple bitters around the edges.

Re: Chewing

Thanks for the suggestion, I ended up finding some plastic tubing that is ment to cover wires at the local hardware store, it is thin and flexiable and had a slit on the underside that was the perfect size to fit over the lino edge. Put it on yesterday afternoon and so far so good. They are chewing on it, but it seems to be pretty sturdy, and was very inexpensive, $4 for 10 feet, so I can replace if they do to much damage.

Ah, I have that on the edges of their wire mesh roof to protect my walls! Good stuff.

Re: Chewing

If I am correct, apple biters is something that your spray and when the animal goes to nibble on it, they bite into a disgusting taste and they won't bite it again?

Is that right?

Where can it be purchased? I would like to try it because Coco sometimes nibbles on the bars of his cage.

Re: Chewing

Stateside it is called Bitter Apple and is available in spray and cream. You should be able to find it at a vet's, pet store or on-lin, like Valley Vet, Jeffers, Pet Edge, Care-A-lot. It has an alcohol base, so if you have some rubbing alcohol, you could try that until you find the Bitter Apple.

Re: Chewing

How much is it and what sized bottles does it come in?

I have most of those magazines, but for horses. Is it used for horses, so would it be in there?

Re: Chewing

The bottle that I have is 16 oz. and I honestly don't remember how much it cost. It was probably $10 - $15, but you don't have to use much. I think that it also comes is an 8 oz. size. Those catalogs have web sites that show all of their products. It may be the same formula, but I can't swear to it. It might be a good idea to double check.
