Spray Paint

I am rebuilding my cage and I am changing it from white to black. I use white wire shelving for a lid. It looks like I will only be using one piece now but it is so loud on the black. Would it be OK to spray paint it black if I don't put it back on the cage for a few days (dry time). The pigs would not come into contact with it, I am just thinking smell.

You need to use animal safe spray paints.

If you use animal safe paints and let it have drying time and air it out then it will be fine.

Re: Spray Paint

Here's a link that might help. I know it's using birds as an example, but it might be a place to start -- Bird-safe Paints

I would say that child-safe paints would probably do the trick (I'm no expert so don't take that as definite). Like, what you'd use to paint a baby's crib or whatnot.

Sometimes paints can take more than a few days to dry throughly and not emit any more fumes. Just because humans can't smell them doesn't mean the pigs won't be able to. Considering cavy lungs are a lot smaller than human ones, I'd say it wouldn't take much to damage them. I'd leave it for a week before I replaced it, to err on the side of safety.

Re: Spray Paint

Do you think I can get pet safe paint at the local home depot? I have 2 pieces so I can paint one while using the other for a week or more and switch. Thanks.

You probably could but it depends on the home depot I guess. Every place is different.

Re: Spray Paint

So, Ly&Pigs, if I used a pet safe, non-toxic spray paint, I could turn white grids into silver grids?(That's if they make silver, pet safe, non-toxic spray paint!)

Re: Spray Paint

I work at a hardware store and yet to see child safe spray paint. The chemicals inside it (the ones used in all arisol cans) is toxic. It's only supposed to be used in open areas and a humans needs a mask to spay it in inclosed areas. It also takes forever to get the smell to go away after it dries. And then there's also the issue of you may have to strip the exsisting paint off the bars so the new paint will stick. Lots of paints won't stick to other paints. It's a messy situation when you have to do that!
