Shelf Liner substrate

Hi!

I'm new in this forum and I saw here some pictures showing a ramp covered by Shelf Liner. I was wondering if is it safe to my guinea pigs to use Shelf Liner as substrate. I mean, my idea is to have some paper towel layers on bottom and Shelf Liner on top inorder to avoid piggies to stay in contact directly with the humidity.

Does anyone know if Shelf Liner is safe to use in a piggy cage?
Is Shelf Liner "non-toxic" material for guinea pigs?

I'm not sure what it is, but it doesn't look safe if it was to be eaten but I'm not sure. It looks like the 'squidgy' stuff that you put under things?

Shelf liner is fine to use in cages. I use it for my ramp, but I don't know if I would use it throughout the whole cage, if that's what you're thinking (your post confused me a little bit). I don't think I would put it on top paper towels though. That defeats the purpose of having the liner grip to the coroplast so it can give traction for the pigs when they go up and down the ramp. I wouldn't use paper towels in a cage anyways.

By the by, if you're going to buy some to use on your ramp, definitely check out your local dollar store before purchasing any! I got mine at the dollar store (they had every colour you could think of), as opposed to buying it at Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, etc, where the cheapest brand was around $5.00. Also, if you're going to use it, just make sure to watch for a bit to be sure your pigs aren't consuming it.

I used it too on my ramps. Worked really well because if they peed on the ramp, it went through and dried quickly. It also was easy to clean by just spraying with vinegar water to neutralize the pee odor. When it gets too nasty I just replaced.

Ditto on the dollar store. I found it there in a decent size roll for $1.

I have used it on ramps and rather liked it. It was great for gripping, and easy to clean. I bent grids, attached a piece of coroplast to the ramp floor with zipties, and wrapped the shelf liner over the coroplast and taped it down. If your ramp is removable all you have to do is take the ramp out, spray it with vinegar, and rinse if off with hot water. The paper towels aren't really necessary.

Yes, it was the original idea to use it throughout the whole cage but after reading this post Guinea Lynx :: Topic - Daisy ate rubber I decided to look for a better solution to get a dry substrate.
