top to the c&c cage???

am in the middle of building my c& c cage. been looking at pics here, and since most of them don't have tops, must i assume that cavies can't jump or climb the 14-1/2" to the top of the grid? don't want to find them out in the room in the morning.

I dont think they jump but do you have pets that can jump or climb into your GP's cage ?

Re: top to the c&c cage???

Most guinea pigs can't make it over the grid and usually have no desire to, as guinea pigs aren't climbing animals. However I think a few people have had a pig escape from the cage, and the only answer could be that they took a flying leap over the grid! I don't think there's any need to make a roof, since hardly any pigs try and get out.
If you have a cat or dog you'll probably want to put a top on, as they are predators by nature and it's only their instinct to chase a small, furry scurrying animal.
Hope this helps

Re: top to the c&c cage???

Just like the other 2 people have posted most Gps will not jump/climb a grid to get out of their cage if they are content. I happen to have 1 female that will take a flying leap and clear the grids with out touching them just because she wants to. Luckly they are in a GP safe room so she can't go anywhere.

You would want to put a small top to a section of the cage if you happen to be homing male(s) next to any female(s) this will stop them from trying to get over the wall to have a visit. A top would also be necessery if you have other animals in the home such as dogs or cats.

...and if you make their cage large and interesting enough, they will not want to leave!

Re: top to the c&c cage???

I love not having a top, as it makes my pigs so much easier to talk to, and they love to come over and talk to me to see if I have something for them to eat. Of course, pig round-ups are much easier too.

Re: top to the c&c cage???

So the chances are slim of a guinea pig wanting to jump over a grid high cage? The C&C cage I'm wanting to build will be on a high large table. I'm just worried about serious injuries if they could climb or jump over a grid high. Am I just over worrying?

My cage has no top and is on top of a table. Never had a problem.

Re: top to the c&c cage???

My cage has a top more to keep my cats out than to keep the pigs in. I left the cage open for a couple of hours once, and no one even tried to escape. The lid is simple though if you decide to make one. Get a couple of pieces of 16" wide wire closet shelving and have someone at the store cut them 2" longer than your cage. Cable tie the pieces of shelving in the middle, and you have a lid that hinges up from either side with a curved lip that goes easily over the connectors on the top of the grids.

Re: top to the c&c cage???

The only time when you should consider putting lid on the cage from what I have heard is when you have other animals in the house or sometimes if you have boys in one cage next to a cage of girls there have been times when the boys will try to climb over to visit the sows. One of my boys tried to climb up the first day the sows came home. The lady at my nearby gp rescue said she had one of her boars escape once also.

Re: top to the c&c cage???

I have an open cage and my boys have never once tried to escape, now trying to get back IN is another story! I also have other animals and the dogs are never in this room and my cat ignores them completely, she just likes the hay. But I got her around the same time I got my first pig and she was just barely weaned so I think she thinks that she is a guinea pig!

Re: top to the c&c cage???

I am going to use either a large piece of card board on the top or take 2 lids to my storage containers and use those. I have a ton of the large storage containers, we fill them with toys and have no use for the lids, so....

My little Kitty Boy likes to climb in the cage and sit with the pigs. I never leave him in there unattended. If I get the pigs out he is right there laying on the floor with them. He may think they are his sisters too, when he was born ( his mom was a feral I took in when she was pregnant) I had him and his siblings in a cage. It was a big dog cage, I kept them in there because I have a 3 year old that loves animals. Well their cage was right next to the piggies, so he probably thinks they are related.

Very creative ideas, but you're going to cut off some of the ventilation in the cage with a solid top. The best ideas for top construction are using extra cube grids or wire closet shelving. If you're really handy with tools, you can also get wire mesh screen and attach it to a wooden frame or bend down sides so it fits over the top of the cage.

Re: top to the c&c cage???

Mine only try to climb back in when I take them out. When I take them out for floor time, they spend the entire time trying to figure out how to get back in.

Re: top to the c&c cage???

That is the same problem I have dacourt !
I almost wonder sometimes why I bother doing floor time, when it seems to make them so miserable. I have a bunch of home bodies on my hands.
