You have had animals die from breeding them, yet you keep breeding. Statistically you have caused the deaths of more GPs then either killer futons or GP eating grids have. Strange the way you can decide what is dangerous and what is not.

If someone is nervous about using the standard size grids, then they could easily switch over to the wire mesh grids. In the US, they can be found at Linens and Things. They are also great for making cages for smaller pets such as rats, chins or mice.

When you say animals that die needlessly are you reffering to your two sows that died giving birth? Or are you blaming something that rarely ever happens with the cage. It wasnt anyones fault in the cage situation, but whos fault was it that a guinea pig died because she was bred.

Who builds their own futon frame? These people bought it. I don't know if they took any action after the company they bought it from, but I replaced the baby it crushed! It was terrible right around Christmas time.

I still talk to these people regularly, they buy hay from me and bring their pigs over when they have a concern.

Another family still has the guinea pig they bought from me 7 years ago! His brother died just a year ago. I sell them food as they like my pellets better than the stuff from the pet store. I also pig sit for them when they go on vacation. They are a lovely family but for some reason I hadn't expected their daughter to age in the 7 years as I hadnt seen her until they came to get new friends for the original pig. They bought a lovely pair, they were brothers to Walt my dalmatian boar. She named the black boar Angus, I thought it was the best name when I heard it, he is totally an "Angus" LOL!

The point is that with any animal, it takes common sense to make it a safe environment for them.

I'm so sorry to hear about that happening to your little pig. My chinchilla just died the other day from the same thing. I think that if they turn their heads sideways, they can fit through. I know how you feel. The grid in my cage was a little bigger than 1 inch. I put chicken wire around the outside of my pigs cage because I don't want the same thing to happen to her. Also, I made sure not to leave anyhting that can be bitten outside of the cage. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Pigger - I'm sorry for the loss of your chinchilla. For safety reasons, chinchilla's should live in a cage where the openings between grids/bars/whatever are no more than 1/2".

Guinea pigs and chinchillas are very different, and thus have different safety needs. We're going to be making a thread about this soon. In the meantime, I'm glad you've changed your cage to make it safer for your chinchilla.

I too am sorry for what happened. It must have been horrible.

As Susan said, this is an issue we are already starting to discuss and will be putting out more info about C&C cages and other pets. The Cubes are not necessarily safe for all animals but the idea of C&C can still apply as all of our beloved pets deserve lots of space to live in.

No, certainly not. The C&C cages were originally designed with guinea pigs in mind, babyproofing where appropriate. If people choose to make them for other animals then they need to check that the cages are modified accordingly. The same goes for floor time - one instance of a poorly built futon that fell on a guinea pig is no reason why cavies should not be allowed floor time in a safe location.

Why on earth would you make an assumption like that from the above posts? It will be a long time before most on this site will recommend a pet store cage.
