Stupid ? regarding ramps

Okay.... this probably sounds really stupid but how do you guys bend grids to make ramps without breaking them? Mine don't seem to have any sort of flexibility at all. I must be missing something...

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

I just lay a piece of wood ( like a 2 by 4) in the middle. Step on the wood so it keeps the grid lying flat and makes a straight bend, and pull up on the side. It should bend into a right angle. Sometimes I have done it and they break on the very outside rung, but most of the time it bent fine. It isn't TOO difficult but they are made of metal so it does require a little effort.

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

Make sure you look at the grids before you ned them. Along the outside edge you can see where the metal connects (I can't think of a better way to explain it) and there is a little raised line across the grids. You don't want to bend along that side or your grid will break. If you bend it the other way it wlll be fine.

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

Hi, I'm new to the site. I have two girls. Building the C&C cage was fun. Finding a decent ramp has been difficult. Looking at some of the creative ramps in the photo galleries is neat.

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

I must have picky piggies. It doesn't matter what I use as a ramp, they won't use it. I finally switched to irrigation tubing(the big black ribbed tube with holes in it). Once I put that up, my guys went up and down all the time. It works well since you can use the holes to zip tie it to the side of the cage.

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

Sometimes piggies won't go up ramps because it may be too steep and/or not enough grip. So they get insecure and would refuse to climb up.

Otherwise if all those factors are factored out, then it just takes some veggies to lure them up there!

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

My ramp is made of wood with 2 hooks at the top to fasten to the top floor. Then I cut up a small bath rug with rubber backing for the ramp and the top floor of the cage. It stays in place on the ramp, gives good traction for the piggies, and can be washed if needed.

This is exactly how I do it. I think it works best

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

I made mine with extra coroplast. I doubled it up, then ziptied an outdoor mat turned up-side down onto it.

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

My guinea pigs currently live in a wooden hutch. I had a smaller hutch before when I owned less guinea pigs, and that had ramps. The guineas never used them, so is it any point putting in two levels when I make a C&C cage for them? And doesn't having two levels make the bottom one very dark?

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

A lot of people adore having two levels on their cage. Personally, I'm only building 1 on the cage I'm currently working on. If you make the second level the same exact size as the first, you're correct, the bottom would be dark. Quite a few people just make a loft or smaller size level on top of the first. For example, I'm building a 2X6 cage. To avoid the bottom being dark, I could put a U-shaped upper level on the top, a 1X6 level across the back, or a small loft level on either one or both sides. Check out the multi-level cages in the Photo Gallery. There are some brilliant ideas in there.

Re: Stupid ? regarding ramps

After changing my fleece out today I am grumbling about how when we move to a larger place, I will have a huge 1 story cage for them. I think now I don't even want corners anymore!! LOL
