Is Rusty Cage Safe?

Hi everyone,
I just want to be assured if housing a guinea pig in a cage that is partly rusty is safe? Can the rust in anyway harm a guinea pig?

I would think that if they nibbled it it couldn't be good for them.

Why would you put anything alive in a rusty cage? Guinea pigs nibble and bite on everything and the iron oxide in rust would definitely be bad for them. If you have to use this cage, get yourself a pair of gloves and some steel wool, or a wire brush and scrub the rust off first.

Do you have a C&C cage? It sounds like the cage was outside.

Safe or not, I'd just throw away a nasty rusty cage and get a new one.

Thanks guys. No I don't have a C&C cage but I have 3 other types of cages. They do nibble on everything and I don't want to be the cause of my guinea pig's death, so I think I'll just through it away and get a new one. I really didn't want to through it away because its a really good size cage.
But I guess safety before comfort eh?

Our rat cage got all rusty with urine so we had to throw it out.

Well actually I do have a C&C cage but I didn't know it was until I found this site. I have the same stuff they use for the C&C but we are using it as a shelf to hold books. Maybe I'll ask and see if I can use it for my cage instead? But I don't have any of that coroplast stuff. Maybe I'll ask for some for Christmas because I have no $money$ right now.

Iam having the same problem we had a guinea pig but last year (2004) it died we put the cage outside for a coupleof month and weve decided to get new piggies.There is a smal amout of rust on the bottom corner.These are baby piggies and i want to make sure it wont hurt them, will it?The pet stores weve been to have cages for 70-90$ 70 being the least!and these are small cages! I understand the not wanting to live in a rusty house but its a spot that will be covered by beeding and newspaper...

Then maybe you should make a C&C Cage, which only cost' around $30 dollars to make, and you can make them as big as you want too.
