Okay, so I've been waiting on this call from the apartments on wether or not my application was approved. She calls and tells me I'm approved (yay!). She then says my security deposit is $200 (yay, that's good!). She then tells me I have to pay a $300 pet fee (holy %$#@!). She told me before that guinea pigs don't really count because they are in a cage, but I guess they changed their minds. I feel like crying! That's a lot of money I was going to spend on stuff like a washer/dryer and a couch. Uh, I'm so upset. I guess I should look on the bright side though; their applications says that there are to be no pet rodents yet they don't mind the piggers. Whew, I had to vent about that. Thanks.

Re: Apartment pet fee! Check rental laws in your state. I know that for here in California if you get charged a pet charge, or as its called here "pet deposit", it is refundable and they can't keep it. I know that won't help much now because you need that money now but don't let them hose you.

Re: Apartment pet fee! Wow. I have heard of no dogs or cats allowed. I never heard of no pet rodents allowed. I praise you for being honest and telling them you had piggies. I may not have done that. I guess you just have to be happy that they are allowing you to have them. Make sure you get a receipt for the pet deposit and it clearly states "pet deposit" on it. You don't want any repercussions down the road.

Re: Apartment pet fee! How much damage do they think guinea pigs can do? Unless they have wall to wall lush carpets, I don't see what the pigs can destroy in the apartment. Last edited by Sabriel : 08-30-05 at 11:19 am. Reason: spelling

Re: Apartment pet fee! That is weird because I used to live in an apartment and they told me if it was in a cage it did not count. I guess it just depends on the apartments.

Re: Apartment pet fee! I would not rent from them. If they told you to begin with that it was ok to have the pigs, then wanted a pet deposit, they are not honest people. Also, did you stand up for yourself and ask why all of the sudden they changed it to wanting a pet deposit? They probibly figured it would be a easy way to make some extra money from you. Notice how the "accepted" your application first, then stuck you with a "change" about the pet deposit? I would be questioning their honesty level. In washington, pet deposits are usually NON-refundable. You donot get them back. Check policy. Plus, a caged animal, fish tank or any animal is up to the landlords discression. If I were you, I would look for a different apartment. But, 300.00 deposit sounds good. I have seen much higher! :0)

Re: Apartment pet fee! I just got off the phone with my fiance and he says he is not paying that much money to keep the piggers. I am extremly upset and crying like a baby! I don't want to have to get rid of my little sweeties! It's not fair. I am going to call the apartments tomorrow and ask them about it and how I was told differently at first. Okay, update. My mom called as I was typing this. I was crying my eyes out to her, and she said the piggers could probably stay with her until I get enough money for the deposit. My mom is the best.

Re: Apartment pet fee! There are a lot of apartments here in PA that dont allow caged animals but will allow cats and dogs, which personally do more, well have the ability to do more damage. I have several animals from piggers, birds, rabbit, dogs etc and have had a hard time finding a place. I dont get the rules sometimes

| Re: Apartment pet fee! True! It is about compromise between two people. Both of you should be allowed to reach an agreement TOGETHER. He is not your guardian or father, but equal in a partenership. OK, I had to say that to! Quote:
