I was in a Petland Pet shop a few days ago and I thought that I would tell you guys what I saw and tell any new GP owners about it. I was looking at the pets when I came across a Suppostly Guinea pig cage. An aquarium! I don't know if All Petlands are the same but I surely don't want to buy ANY pets from there!

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! That's not a surprise at all. This is a problem with all petstores that sell pets and not just petland or chain stores. The pets aren't kept in the best conditions and everyone is misinformed. It depends on the exact store as to how bad it is but many people choose not to even buy supplies from a store that sells pets.

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! I haven't had that bad experience with Petsmart tho. My two guinea pigs have no big health problems and they are about 5 and 6 years old. I had heard that pet shops were bad but didn't really believe it till I saw Petland. It's really horrible.

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! Petsmart is bad too. They advertise that they back all their pets up with a health guarentee. But, ask them what they realy do with the sick animals. Plus, when you shop at petsmart, you are helping to support them breed and selling animals. Also, the petsmart by my house (I stopped using a long time ago). Sells g-pigs, but has no exotic vet. What do they do with the sick pigs I asked? The lady there told me they "ship them back to the breeder". Do you think that pig will make it back or recieve proper care? I would almost guarentee not! It would not be cost affective for them to "cure the pig", they will probibly just euthinize it. Next time adopt an already homeless pig. :0)

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! In one of the petstores I saw they had a rat living in with the guinea pigs, they say that he/she climbs through the wall to get to them.

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! Pet stores that do not sell animals are ok to buy at. I get my supplies from the feedstore (one that does not stock/sell rabbits), and online. There are several threads on here tha tgive options for buying pellets/hay. I will see if I can dig them up for you. :0)

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! Not trying to start a fight: What if guinea pigs in the pet store die? I know buying them from petstore is bad, but you could prevent them from dying. I'm not trying to convince you to but from petstores, but thats my opinion.

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! Okay you go to petstore and buy a pig. So the store orders five more. Okay you "saved" one pig but put five in trouble. Do you see my point?

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! I see both points. I But what happens with the onces that are not ordered from the petshop. If someone accidently has breeded there guinea pigs and the pet shop doesn't take the babbies what would the owner do, trow them out? It sound cruel in both ways. There should be a good petshop that knows about what they are selling. I think both sides have there ups and downs.

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! If someone does accidentaly breed pigs, it is their responsibility to find and place all the babies in appropriate homes. NOT dump them off at the pet store. That is the same thing as throwing them away. Just look at it this way, if that person had not "accidently breed" the pigs in the first place, there would not be babies now would there? So, since the animal is helpless and dependent on you for its survival, it is the owners DUTY, to find good homes for them. That is just my thoughts on it. I will be screening all aplicants for my babies, and placing them in good homes. I love animals and especially my girl sweetpea, and her babies deserve no less from me. Here is a link for you: http://www.kmshayloft.com/index.html http://cavycages.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8886 http://www.oxbowhay.com/index.sp Hope it helps. I am always looking for better deals/better food (that is affordable). Oxbow shipping prices are kinda high for me, but may work for you? I used another petfood delivery site that sells Oxbow (shipping only $2 cheaper). But, better that then feeding your animal a brand that may end up hurting your pig. Have a great day! :0)

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! Funnygpigs, I have a question for you. Please DON'T think I am supporting stores that sell small animals - I'm not. I have plenty of good reasons (conditions, encouraging breeding, poor knowledge and training, no screening of owners, inadequate/incorrect information given to new owners) but I have trouble with the concept that a purchase of one pig is an automatic order for five more. Why would this be? Why isn't it an order for ONE more? When I explain my position to people, I skip the "five more" reason I've heard here, because I don't understand it and can't justify it. I'd like to have a better grasp of why this is held to be true.

| Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! Quote:
"Imagine you have a store. One item you carry you sell often. There is a demand for it. So next time you need to order you order twice or even 10 times as much to keep up with the demand and in the hopes of selling even more. If you sell out again you order even more the next time. Another item you rarely if ever sell. It sits on the shelf getting dusty. When/if it eventually sells you are more likely to discontinue carrying it because you are losing money on it." There it is. We have this discussion ever few months when someone comes on the forum and thinks they have a new outlook on the situation. Believe me rescuers and those that support rescue have already thought through all the options. You want the honest truth about what happens to the pet store GPs that don't get sold? They will probably die. It's horrible but inevidable. Their deaths are the only way to stop the cycle of abuse and neglect perpetuated by the pet shop industry. My heart goes out to those pet store pigs but I want so much better for them that I have to sacrifice them for the greater good. If those GPs are lucky they may be dumped at a shelter and find a home that way without the pet store making any money off of their blood. |

Re: Petland is horrible! DON'T BUY YOUR PETS FROM THERE! If people can't just dump their babies at a petstore they are going to take ALOT more precautions against breeding. If someone thinks we can just bring the babies back to the petstore if our 2 new guinea pigs end up being male and female then they aren't going to care if they have babies. They get to see cute babies and they can get rid of them when they aren't so cute. If a petstore doesn't take those babies though then people are going to want a gurantee these guinea pigs are the same sex or they are going to be more likely to seperate them so they don't have to keep finding homes for the babies. The same with the breeders. If they can't sell their guinea pigs they aren't going to want the headache of dealing with that many babies. If there is no demand then noone wants to supply more and deal with a surplus.
