Question Dog behavior

Hey everyone. I have a question about one of the things my dog does. When someone she spends time with (not me, heh) comes home, she brings them something. Like, my mom is her best bud and when she comes home, Zoey will drag the bed out of her crate and bring it to my mom but not give it to her; she'll just pull it around. If she can't get in her crate she'll find a bone or a toy to carry around. It's really cute. She will do this occasionaly to other family members, but does it everytime to my mom.
I told my mom that she does it because it's like she's bringing something dead/food to her as a sign that she is submissive and that my mom is boss. Is this right?

Re: Dog behavior

Yeah I think that's part of it. I also read that dogs and cats bring their owners "presents" and present them to their owners as a sign of companionship and love, sort of a thank you for caring for them. One time my cat came home with a pigeon in it's mouth. Luckily it was still alive, and we "saved" it. o.o

Re: Dog behavior

Yup, that's correct. The dog is bringing your mom a gift. Too bad that when my beagle brought me a gift, it was a dead sparrow with it's head torn off. (We think she found it on the ground after the neighborhood cat killed it, because we later saw the cat with the sparrow head.)

Re: Dog behavior

I think my mom will cry (good tears) when I tell her this!

Re: Dog behavior

My lab brings us toys when we come home. He also brought us a possum once...yes, a possum. We released it in the woods nearby. He even led us to a turle that was stuck in the fence, which someone obviously put there because turtles don't just fly 3 feet into the air. We released the turtle too.

Re: Dog behavior

My very first dog, Coco, she brought us a kitten one time. I was so mad I thought she had killed it! But it was alive. We told her to show us and started walking out back and she led us to a litter of kitties. It was so sweet.

Re: Dog behavior

My mother in law has a cat that will meow all night looking for her stuffed toys. Shack whas her name. She would take anything stuffed and put it in the water bowl. Which happened to be the first thing my Mother in law would change in the moring. If it wasn't a toy it was a pillow, stick, sock, or anything else she could find.

My cats have also left me little gifts. A dead mouse, bird, and lizard. What surprises me is they can't get out of there outside cage. So how they got those I have no idea.
