Unhappy County Fair

Yesterday I spent most of my day at the county fair with my boyfriend and his family having a great time and having some laughs. My boyfriends cousin, decided to take her son to the animal part of the fair. Which I was trieing to advoid but was forced over there, sense everyone decided to go. Well to get to my point I couldn't believe how the animals were kept. I knew they weren't going to be in the best conditions, but the cages were soo small and cramped I almost cried. There was no guinea pig's there thank god, but there was rabbits. LOTS of rabbits. And their cages were litteraly the size of them, no room to run, and no room to turn. Also they were on wire bottom cages, that were about to fall apart. I know I can't do anything about it sense I called the SPCA and they actualy yelled at me for wasting their time by complaining about such a minor thing. But those animals stay there for a week in those conditions. The worst things I saw there were the pigs, and the chickens. They had a "hold a chick" exibit and I held one, it was so sickly I cried and my boyfriend thought I was over reacting, but held me tight anyways. And the pigs, oh the pigs, they had to lay in their own fieces(sp?) their cages were so tinny. I felt so bad that those animals had to be in those conditions, I just had to vent.

Re: County Fair

Seriously, the SPCA yelled at you? That's harsh. I think you did the right thing by trying at least.

Re: County Fair

Yeah the lady must have had a bad day or something. It was wicked noisey in the background and I said "I would like to make a complaint on how the animals are kept at the County Fair, please" and she says "NO, NO you can not make a complaint! The animals are FINE there! Good-bye". I was so mad, I couldn't believe how rude that was.

Re: County Fair

Heh, it sounds like she'd already had lots of complaints. Maybe call back, see if you get a different person in the call centre? You would think the SPCA would have more than one person handling complaints and reports.

Re: County Fair

Yeah maybe, I'll try calling tomorrow and see what they have to say. Hopefully it's a bit nicer this time.

Re: County Fair

Try contacting the fair board. I assume these were 4H rabbits? Maybe try to get ahold of their club leaders to express your concerns. (I guess maybe this fair is over, but for future reference)

I don't disagree with you in regards to the wire floors, but in reality, the majority of the rabbits in this country aren't house rabbits, but live in outdoor wire-bottomed hutches. People just don't seem to know any better I guess.

Re: County Fair

Yes I know what you mean about how they are most likely outdoor animals. I called the board already and no use in that they said they would try to suggest to them to get bigger cages but couldn't force them. I felt so mad because their cages were litteraly the size of the largest petstore bought hamster cage and that is pretty small. Their bodies were so squeezed in there, and it was so hot out. I simpathize greatly for them. The fair is indeed over but I hope they have atleast, a decent size hutch. But I am doubtful of even that.

Re: County Fair

One of the rabbits at our county fair had heat stroke yesterday. The paper reported that they stuck him in a pail of ice water. Poor baby. We have a Six Flags nearby so I don't need to go to the fair-boy, am I glad.
