Ugent!

I spotted a kitten in an ally but it had pasted, when I was putting away the body (there are little kids on my street) I spotted another one. This kitten was still alive but looked very weak. I went to reach for it but it jumped down in to an abandoned house I tried to acess the basement from the house as it was open but there was a huge peice of ply wood blocking the way. I would really like some help on what to do I don't think this little guy can last more than a day or two with out help. I need help on what I should do.

It's been an hour since I found it. I'm really worried that he won't make it.

Re: Ugent!

This sounds weird but you can call the fire department.

Re: Ugent!

First take a few deep breaths...you need to be calm. People listen to you better when you're calm.

It's good you want to help this kitty. Kitties are pretty tough. If he can run away from you, he has some strength left.

Please don't go into an abandoned basement. That's not safe for you, and the cat may well be able to hide from you anyway. This is what it will do if it's scared.

You can call the fire department; you can call the local animal shelter (although I would try the FD first.) Call the NON-emergency number from the phone book. Don't use 911, or they may be too irritated to listen about the cat.

Tell them who you are and where you are and explain the problem. Tell them the address of the house where the cat went. Ask them what they can do. If they can't do anything, ask them who you should call, who can help you. Don't give up.

You have to stay very calm to do this, because people have trouble taking other people (especially kids) seriously if they sound hysterical.

There are plenty of people and organizations who will help stray or abandoned animals. Just stay with it until you get someone who can help.

Re: Ugent!

The kitten maybe ferral and not used to any human contact. I agree call the Fire Department. I have used them in the past and they have been great. Good Luck.

Re: Ugent!

I went back out and saw that the kitten was out and that it appeared to have an eye problem. But it once again slipped away and I could not find him this time. And now I can't call the fire department, as she is in no direct danger or any other lame excuse they would come up with.

Call your local animal control if you see the kitten again.

Re: Ugent!

Try putting out food in the basement(just toss it). If you can, get a trap and plant it with a can of wet cat food(for the strong smell) right by the door.

Re: Ugent!

Cat traps are available from the humane society. Getting one will require help from your parents. Be careful to not handle wild cats. They can carry rabies. If you get bit you may have to get a series of shots. Calling the humane society may help. They are usually over run with other problems, and will not come catch a kitten. I had to get a trap to catch the kittens next to my house. When transproting them, they try to scratch and bite. Good luck with the firedepartment--catching kittnes falls under the humane societies job. How knows? Maybe you live in a small town where they would help. :0)

Re: Ugent!

They said no they could not help by catching it. But I work with a local rescue call Castaway Critters and I'm seeing if they'll let me borrow one of their traps.
