    Wisdom Teeth?

I'm getting my bottom two wisdom teeth out on wednesday and im TERRIFIED! Has anyone had them out on here? I'm getting them done whilst i'm asleep so that makes me feel a bit better, but knowing they're really impacted worries me
How did people feel after the op? Were you asleep also? Swelling? How long were you in pain for afterwards?

    Re: Wisdom Teeth?

Just the bottom two? Easy mode.

But yeah, I had all four of mine taken out a few years ago. I was also put to sleep for the procedure...let me tell you, you'll have no idea what's going on. You will pass out before you know it and you won't wake up until after everything is done.

You will be pretty sore for a few days. The day of the procedure is obviously the toughest; you won't be able to move your jaw much, and you'll be stuck with liquid foods. Ice cream, pudding, mashed potatoes, etc. But they will prescribe you some pretty hardcore painkillers, so you'll probably be pretty numb physically, and out of it mentally. I think by the third or fourth day, I was starting to feel a bit more...normal.

As for swelling, I didn't get that bad, but I've seen some friends who had it done and ended up looking like hamsters with their pouches stuffed with food for a few days. But since you're only getting two done, it probably won't be as bad.

    Re: Wisdom Teeth?

I was asleep when I got mine done as well. All four taken out and impacted as well. The best advice I got was to Stay ahead of the pain. I.e. Maybe the first day the pain won't be so bad and you'll think "Oh, maybe I can do this without the pain meds and just take Advil or Tylenol." Don't try to do this. GET THE PAIN MEDS! Even if it doesn't hurt that much in the hours immediately afterward, it gets worse. By the time you realize the OTC stuff is not enough, you will already be miserable and playing catch-up.

As long as your are taking the pain medication, your recovery shouldn't be too bad. For me it was 5 days of this:

    Wake up
    Eat
    Rinse mouth
    Percocet
    Sleep
    Repeat every 4-6 hours

Also, I was terrified of getting dry socket as I'm told it is excruciating. I was fastidious about doing the warm water and salt gentle mouth swish every few hours just because I was so afraid of getting it. And don't drink anything with a straw!

Follow your oral surgon's instructions, take the pain meds, and you should be fine! I also asked them to save the teeth and give them to me afterwards, so I still have them and it is pretty cool. Tell us how it goes and we would love to see a picture of your chipmunk cheeks!

    Re: Wisdom Teeth?

haha, i was going to ask them if i could keep the teeth, i'll have to remember!!
They were going to take all four out but since the top ones weren't causing much bother they said i could keep them phew.

I've stocked up on squidgy food! Anyone got any good ones that will be a nice treat from soup and water? haha

    Mashed potatoes sounds good!

I've seen a few videos on youtube of people acting really funny after they've woken up, did you guys experience this?

Thanks for the tips ec90! I've heard about dry socket too, so i'll have to remember to rinse every couple of hours.

    eep!

I was pretty loopy for a while when I woke up...apparently when the nurse tried to hold the door open for me on my way out (since I was stumbling around like I was drunk), I called her a [w]itch and said I could do it myself. I felt terrible when I found out, and called the surgeon's office to apologize...she said that's pretty common for people to react like that while the knockout drug wears off.

    Re: Wisdom Teeth?

I had five wisdom teeth taken out all at once (Lucky me, had an extra). I think two of them were slightly impacted. The procedure started out bad because laughing gas doesn't work on me, and then the nurse missed my vein with the IV.

BUT after a different nurse came in and put the IV in properly, I was out right away. I wasn't loopy afterward either. I was a little dizzy, but I walked to the car on my own two feet and understood everything that was going on.

I didn't need the pain pills they gave me, and the antibiotics made me sick. I went to a post-operation checkup about a week later but after sitting in the waiting room for four hours my mom decided we should just leave. The side that had the extra tooth was sore for a while, but I haven't had any problems since.

    Re: Wisdom Teeth?

I'm still too young, but the pain you guys described sounds like the pain I had to go through when I had braces. Whenever they'd get adjusted, my teeth would hurt SO bad for days after. I couldn't even eat a soft sandwich without wanting to scream with pain. Maybe I just have a sensitive mouth...

Now you guys are scaring me about when the time comes to get my wisdom teeth pulled...

    Re: Wisdom Teeth?

When I had mine pulled, I lived on blueberry applesauce for a while.

Dry socket is horrendous. I had it when I had a different tooth extracted. It felt, and still sometimes feels 11 months later, like a nail being hammered into my jaw. A rusty, jagged nail with an electric current.

I didn't get put under for the wisdom teeth, but last month I had sinus and nose surgery under anesthesia and while I was recovering, I was apparently really annoyed at someone nearby who was moaning a lot while she was waking up, and I kept mumbling in her direction, "shut the $#&% up! Shut up!" And then in a moment of total hypocrisy, I would moan and beg the nurses for something for the awful pain in the roof of my mouth.

My wisdom teeth hurt more the first day than braces, but less than braces once I got to the second day. Dry socket hurts more than braces every second of the day. If your pain gets better and then worse over a few days, it's probably dry socket. Women are more susceptible to it than men, due to hormones. So if you're a woman, you should schedule tooth extractions the week before your period, when hormone levels are low and your immune system is most normal.

    Re: Wisdom Teeth?

Green smoothies sound like a good option for people after having their teeth extracted. My favorite junk food smoothie recipe is:

    - A handful of spinach
    - 1 banana
    - A couple of tablespoons of chia gel (good source of omega-3 and trace minerals, completely tasteless)
    - teaspoon of matcha powder (because why not add some antioxidants?)
    - tablespoon of cocoa powder
    - 1 cup of almond milk

Makes sure you're getting some nutrients at the very least. Also, it tastes like a banana chocolate milkshake. I swear you can't taste the spinach.

I need some wisdom teeth pulled. I want to record myself coming off anesthesia. " Is this real life?"
