    My son reads to Cupcake

My son was very happy to get a pet. He chose the species and I clean up the poo. We homeschool and are home often, so the poor creature gets more socialization than it probably wants! haha Here is a picture of my 5 year old reading to Cupcake in the schoolroom. That is the room she runs around in for non-pen time.

It was a book about two hamsters. The son thought Cupcake would like it.

That is so cute! I'm also home schooled and I often have out my piggies as I do my assignments. It makes school more enjoyable! n.n

Your photo brings back memories from when my son was that age. From the time we had guinea pigs, my son held a guinea pig on his lap when he did homework. He's 21 and in college but he still brings one out when he has reading assignments.....although he doesn't read out loud to them.....

@go_ellie and @Iotanine : Wow! more homeschoolers! How nice that you have another classmate . At this point I am not sure how much my son is learning with her crazy antics.

@pinky : That is so sweet! What a great habit to get into, . and who knows, maybe he does read to them!

Well, he does talk to them all the time. When he gets home from school or work, he always stops by the cages and says a few words to them and pets them all. He has a couple of favorites out of the group, though, and I can tell it's mutual.

He's probably learning a lot! My brother, who was also home schooled, had a hamster and learned so much more (and was more focused) when he held her. It was adorable n.n Having the guinea pig's with me just makes me not get bored when I'm reading over a lesson xD Having them to pet and move around makes it just so much more enjoyable! And I'm happy to see more home schooled kids! My parents STILL get made fun of or criticized because of their choice to home school us, but we all turned out fine. n.n

They actually have a program in my area where they bring dogs to schools so the kids can read to them. Apparently it's a lot less intimidating for them to read to an animal than to a teacher, so they get practice without pressure.

mufasa I thought a program with animals other than dogs sounded great
but i had trouble finding one for piggies. That and my husband didnt want me to
because he thought it would endanger my piggie

So cute! As others have said, my pig, Ginger loves cuddling with me and running around while I do my homework.

Re: My son reads to Cupcake

When I first got my piggies, I read to them to bond with them. It really calmed them down and helped them to get used to my 'reading voice'. So now, when they are stressed out or scared, I can use my 'reading voice' to calm them down.

Your son is quite the gentleman, helping Cupcake with her reading! If only we knew what cavies thought.. It'd probably be like, "Dude, look, there's noms in there!"

I still read to my animals.

This is so cute! I wouldn't have the patience to home school my daughter, she drives me crazy being home 24/7 and I can't wait for her to start kindergarden next year so I can have a few hours of peace and quiet!

We wonder if Cupcake is getting any ideas from the hamsters antics in the books, .

A family friend does that here. She brings her dog to the kids. It helps kids not be scared of dogs, too. I never thought of that until you mentioned it, but my son was all for reading to Cupcake where sometimes he doesn't want to read to me.
