Gratitude: Jumble's 1st Birthday

May 5 is the day that we celebrate Jumble’s birthday. Tomorrow, she will be one year old. It’s hard to believe that she was a tiny, furious, judgmental little Abyssinian sow that could fit in the palm of my hand. It’s even harder to believe that someone could throw out a litter of piggies like they are trash. And it’s unbearable to think that she is the only one who survived.

But I want to give thanks from me and on her behalf:

My gratitude for my boss for rescuing Jumble and bringing her to us. She is still furious and judgmental, just a lot bigger.

My gratitude to this forum for giving me a desperately needed crash-course on cavy care. I had no idea how complex they are.

My gratitude to our local rescue, MGPR, for bending over backward to educate us and help us get two more wonderful pigs, Triton and Oink.

My gratitude to the embrace of the universal Love, which kept Picckalo alive despite him being so severely abused.

My gratitude to everyone here for the stories of joy, sorrow, and hope, which keep my thoughts in perspective.

And, my thanks for the revelation that there is nothing quite so uplifting as a couple of kilos of piggies sitting on your chest while you lie down on the couch, with them wheeking softly and reminding you that you are not, in fact, in charge anymore.

Aw, so she's a Cinco de Mayo piggie. Disgusting that someone could toss out a little life like that, but I'm so glad she ended up with you. One of my cats had a similar start, getting tossed on the expressway at 8 weeks old by some low-life scum. He's been here three years now and is a sweet, lazy loverboy.

Jumble is proof that there are little miracles even in the face of all the bad things in the world. It's sad that she was the only one to survive, but at least one life was spared and it sounds like she's repaid you in lots of love (and attitude!) for your kind deed.

Aw, happy birthday Jumble! It's so great that you found her, and now she's as happy as can be I'm sure. I can't believe someone could just toss out an animal like that, as if their life wasn't important.

I don't know if my guinea pigs have changed my world view, but I do know that since I've gotten them, I'm so much more cheerful. I also take better care of my dog. It's come to the point where I don't know what I'd do without them.
