How Did You Name Your Piggie?

There are some really fun threads going on right now, so I thought I'd toss out another one. How did you come up with your piggy's name? Did he or she ever have a different name? What was your inspiration?

I'll start off with my gang. When we had Mufasa, my husband came up with the name out of the blue. We're big Disney fans, and he really likes the "Lion King" movie and play, so that's probably why.

When Mufasa crossed the Rainbow Bridge at an all-too-young age, we saw two piggies named Laverene and Shirley on Petfinder at a shelter an hour away. We went there intending to adopt both, but Shirley was gone so we took Laverne. "Her" paperwork showed her original name had been Starbright, and the other was originally Midnight. I changed the name to Leela since I'm a Futurama fan.

We then found a female piggy named Chloe on Craigslist and changed her name to Amy, also from Futurama. Meanwhile, we found out Starbright/Laverne/Leela was a he! If I wanted to stick with Futurama, I would have had to go with Kiff to match Amy, so I went in another direction completely. We used to call Mufasa "Rat" as a nickname, and our new piggy was a boar, so Borat seemed fitting (plus I liked that movie). We debated changing Amy's name, but it fits her because she's a prissy, opinionated, pampered little diva so I couldn't imagine her as anything else.

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

My daughter named the first 2 from The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Goofy and Mickey but Mickey ended up being a female and got pregnant. We got a new friend for Goofy and called him Mickey to stay with the theme. Original Mickey got changed to Minnie. We got Minnie a friend and named her Daisy. When Minnie had her babies we kept her son and named him Donald. We were out of Mickey Mouse characters so I got to name the next two. We got the next one from Kijiji and she came with the name Angel but I always loved the name Gracie so thats what I changed it to. The last one we got from the SPCA and she came with the name Lucky but I didnt really like that for her. I remember on The View a couple months ago was a basketball star and his wife promoting a reality show I think. I can't remember what its called but anyway her name was La La and I loved that name for a pet. Plus my daughter really likes Lalaloopsys(toy doll) so thats how she got her name

My first pig I named Blueberry. He was all white and such a round plump ball, hence the name Blueberry. He ended up having lots of health problems and passed at only 5 months old. My other pig I named Pancake, because it went along with Blueberry (Bluberry Pancake). Then the other names fell into place...... Pancake, Butters, Chocolate Chip (Chip for short) and Biscuit!

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

I was originally gonna name my pair Nuts and Volts, after the Catching Fire charecters who go by those nicknames. (thats book 2 in the Hunger Games trilogy and my favorite outta the series.) but the abyssinian, who would be Volts, was the scardy cat of the two which did not go with the charecter personalities. Plus Nuts was a girl in the book. So while looking at them thinking I realized the abyssinian looked like a Porcupine! So that became his name. (i have a cat named Possum so this isnot unusual for me) and then my little american was more confident. So as a tribute to my brother, who is the whole reason i got them, i named my american after his favorite charecter, who is also from Catching Fire, Finnick Odair! I just call him Odair for short. Or Mr. Odair if he's being a pain.

Mine is not very original. First came Cinn (short for cinnamon) because her color reminds me of ground cinnamon. Then came Meg (short for nutmeg) I suppose I came up with that to stay with a spice thing. Not really sure. Meg just looks like a nutmeg to me. She is the biggest nut out of the two. Comical, the brave adventurer, and curious.

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

What a great idea for a thread!

I adopted my sow from a family when their son became allergic to her. She was named Sally after the Cars movies. She's a tricolor Abyssinian with lovely patches of copper in her fur. I always thought the name Penelope (Penny) was cute, and since she had copper colored fur it fit perfectly! Her name suits her very well!

My neutered boar was originally named Fudge. He has had a rough past, and I thought he needed a new name for his new life with me. My mother and I are big fans of the Big Bang Theory, so my mother suggested that we name him Sheldon. It fit him perfectly. He's quite a tall, lean pig so it matches the Sheldon from the show. People always ask me why I didn't name him Leonard, but Leonard is my least favorite character. Sheldon and Penny are my favorites so it works out well!

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

My 3 little pigs all came from a rescue in South Florida.

Goose got to keep his name, because it was so fitting. Everytime I look at him all I can think in my head is, "Silly Goose!"

Stalla's name at the rescue was Jan. It definitely didn't fit her. She's such a boss hog in the cage she needed something that commanded respect...and in turn she ended up Stella. In all honestly I think it had something to do with the skunk in the movie "Over the Hedge"

My little white baby was named Yogert at the rescue and I hated that name, but loved her so much. I wanted to name her something that had to do with her white fur, but nothing fit, like snowball, snowflake, blizzard, etc... Finally I gave up on that and started thinking about her beautiful pink/red eyes and finally it hit me. She is know known as Ruby, because her eyes just sparkle.

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

When I got Harmony at the pet store (boo pet store!) She was originally named Oreo. And I have to say, there has never been another guinea pig more fitting for the name Oreo. Her entire head is black, her rump has a perfectly round black spot on it, and everything in between is white. But when I got her home I wanted to change her name, so I changed it to Hermoine, from Harry Potter. A few days later I decided I wanted to change her name, so I changed it to Harmony, because it was similar enough so people wouldn't get confused. I wish I would have known she was pregnant then, I could have had a gaggle of Harry Potter themed guinea pig babies... Any way, then, when her babies were born, I thought I had a two girls and a boy. So I named the boy Peanut, because he was the chubbiest, I named one of the girls Melody, and the other girl Tinkerbell. Well, I was completely wrong, Tinkerbell was a boy, who I renamed Copper, and Melody was a boy, who I renamed Sam. I went through a lot of names with Peanut, Panda, Skittles... Until I settled on Holly. Well, long story short, my friend, who took Copper and Sam, and renamed them Sundae and Oreo. Even longer story short, Oreo really WAS a girl, and they had babies. I was going to take a girl baby, who I named Jezzebelle. But then Jezzebelle turned out to be a boy, so we called him J.B. Now, I'm going to take Sundae back, along with J.B., who I renamed Snickers. The end.

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

Enja, Lia, Mücke and Amadeus already had their name and I saw no reason changing it. Well, I think Amadeus is quite long for a name, but he had it for four years.
Ida was called Waheeda before which I think is too long as well, so I shortened it to Ida.
Dyani was called Dakini before, which has a nice meaning but reminds me at bikini. So I looked for some name with meaning that started with D and ended up with Dyani.
Neev was called Serafina which I think is a horrible name. When I had looked for a name for Dyani I had seen Niamh and I liked it. But the meaning didn´t really fit for a pretty dark cavy (Dyani is mostly chocolate colored) while it does fit for a cream colored cavy. I used another way to write it however.
and Tiffy- well she needed a name, and I think Tiffy fits for her.

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

Most of mine came with their names, since they were adopted from Craigslist or given to me.

Herbie: storebought (2001- I didn't know better!) Just looked like a Herbie!

Patches: Given to me, came with his name.

Squiggy: Craigslist, came to me as "Piggy". I slightly modified it.

Zumi: Craigslist, came to me as Zoomie. She was Squig's cage mate. YUP...

Zoe: Baby of Squiggy and Zumi. I liked the name, had a dog named Zoe.

    Punkin: Craigslist, came named.

Butterbum: Craigslist, came named. I got her and Punkin together for buddies for Zumi.

Holly and Ivy: Craigslist- since I got them at Christmas time, I wanted Christmassy names....

I named my first one Ootachi because I was big on pokemon as a kid and had gotten the japanese version of the gold and silver guide so I could see what new pokemon would be coming out. This was the pokemon http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Furret_(Pok%C3%A9mon)

    T
he next one I got I named Arwen after having just finished reading the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Arwen was pregnant when I got her and had two little piggies. One I named Hinata from a character on Gundam Wing.

The boy, who I gave to my cousins, was named Drizzt from the R.A. Salvatore series.

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

Our Aby, Jumble, has a long name: Joy Maria Burrito Lopez. We got her by surprise after she was thrown out as a tiny baby. The name had to reflect who she is, how she got here, and some of our background. Also, since my husband and I have a bureaucratic background, it had to involve naming by committee and an acronym. "Joy" was the first thing my husband said when he saw her. "Maria" is a family name, and Burrito Lopez were additional names thrown in by the kids. So: JMBL, or Jumble. And, it fits how she got here, because the only reason she was caught after being thrown out in the forest was because she got stuck in a jumble of roots. Her siblings weren't so lucky.

Triton came with his name, but he's tri-colored and also kingly (and man, does he drink water) so it stuck. Picckalo has a flute-like whistle when he's excited. And Oink came with her name. We thought about changing it and then we saw how much she eats, so ....

We adopted our first pig and named her Bella because she was so pretty! Then...we realized she was a he...so we re-named him Fella! Easy name change, just one letter! We named our second pig Junior before we even saw him, we just liked the name...and we are kind of 'redneck' like that!

Lightning (my boy) is really fast - ironically his sister Cinnamon is faster but since Lightning came with the name it stuck.

Cinnamon was Woody when I first got her- I was trying to come up with a good boy name and then I realized she was, well, a SHE. She's Cinnamon colored and it was the only name I really liked- it seems to fit her well.

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

I just posted in another thread about how I was going to make a blog for this! What a coincidence!!

My first ever guinea pig was named Schnoozer [RIP]! I had him during late elementary years into junior high! I have always been difficult to wake up in the morning, sleeping with my phone in my hand so I can just hit the snooze button over and over for at least an hour before getting up. When I first got him during the summer, he would wake up and start wheeking for food and chewing on the cage bars, I would wake up just long enough to "SSSHHH!" him or ask him to be quiet by tossing a foam pillow his way [cruel, whatevver. I was 12] He wouldn't make another noise for about 6 or 7 minutes, then start chewing again! He was like my snooze button! His name got switched from Larry to Schnoozer within the first 3 days of him living in my bedroom.

Bocefus got his name from The Weakest Link. I only got him a year and a half ago but I remember a guy being on that show like 8 years ago named Bocefus and I loved it! Right after that episode, Paradise Hotel came on and a guy named Beau was on there. I then decided my first male child's name would be Bocefus and his nickname would be Beau/Bo.

Lucien [RIP] got his name from my boyfriend. I'm pretty sure he just tried to think of something badass or tough?

Waylon took a little bit longer. I got him after Lucien died and he went nameless for about a week until I was talking to someone at school about thinking of a name and they suggested Waylon. There is a country singer named Bocephus and his real-life best friend is named Waylon, so together they became Bocefus and Waylon!

Warden was my first "rescue" pig since living in Pittsburgh. When I first gave him floor time, I was playing Dragon Age: Origins and he started patrolling the corners of the little enclosure he was in. The video game I was playing has characters called Grey Wardens who fight dragons and protect everyone, blah blah, so I thought, "Heck, he's like these dudes in this game!" Bam, Warden is named.

Alenko [RIP] was the last name of my favorite character from Mass Effect. I took him on all my missions and used his abilities to their fullest. Stupid me chose love from Ashley over the bond of friendship with Alenko in the end-game though and he lost his life in the last mission. In remembrance of him, I thought it'd be nice to name a strong pig after him. Unfortunately, both my Alenko's passed away after only being with my for 2 months. =/ I should have known not to give someone a name of a person that died in a massive explosion.

November was a girl in my high school that had super red hair. When I met this abby, I instantly thought of her! And, to make it an even more perfect name, my favorite character from the television show Dollhouse had the codename November. Her personality would switch with just a simple sentence, much like that of my own November. He is the most bipolar pig I have ever met and just can't decide whether he wants to be a butt kicker or kisser.

Cara got her name from another television show I was watching called Legend of the Seeker. In the show, Cara was a total hottie Mord-Sith who kicked butt before asking names. Cara is my first female guinea pig and I was hoping she would have the attitude to match her namesake!

The newest addition has yet to be decided, but his name will come from one of my many favorite X-men characters. Blink[or Ferguson], Loa, Rictor, or Pryde. Just because I like the x-men

Buttercup is named after Reese's peanut butter cups. His coloring reminds me of it. I can't have dairy products anymore and I miss that candy terribly.

Numa is named after a silly song, Numa Numa by O-zone.

Artemis is a boy piggie, but Artemis was also a cat from a show I watched as a little kid. Sailor Moon.

Erebos is a god of the underworld. My husband named him. I, um, don't really like his name!

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

    Lol love your guys' stories!

Before I got my guinea pig, I planned to get a black and white one and name her Oreo. I have no idea why though, I think I got the idea of getting a guinea pig while eating Oreos . Then, when I came here, you guys told me to opt to adopt! There actually happened to be a CL piggy named Oreo that was black and white in my area! Then I found a super pretty tricolor named ginger. When my dad finally said yes to me getting a guinea pig, I told the lady who had Oreo and she asked if I would take her friend too. Err, I didn't know she had a friend lady! I didn't want to separate them., so I told the girl that had ginger. I planned to stick with the "sweets that match their fur color" theme so I planned to name her s'mores. Then I started playing around with the two names. I found that it was more comfortable to call the name ginger and there were so many nicknames I cold make from it. I finally decided to just keep her name.

So, basically, I kept the name that her original owner had for her haha.

P.s. sorry for any spelling errors this is my first time replying on an iPad .

Re: How Did You Name Your Piggie?

When I got my first two piggies in my new apartment, they were named Fuery and Havoc after two of the characters who were in the military in FullMetal Alchemist. When Havoc died, it didn't seem right to make the next pig fit in the FMA theme. So I went in another direction and named the new member Alexander Anderson, after one of the cooler characters in another anime, Hellsing Ultimate. Alex for short.
